Does FCP (5.0.4) export timecode via firewire?
Posted by Dndobson on August 23, 2006 at 7:45 pmI have a Sony HDV Deck (M25U) and it says it can accept external timecode from the firewire – but when output a sequence from FCP to the deck, the time code is most definately NOT the sequence timecode – don’t what it is — not random.
So it occurs to me the FCP doesn’t export timecode with the video and audio. Is that true?

August 23, 2006 at 8:07 pmYes, that’s true. Actually, time code isn’t exported from ANY NLE that I know of. That may change some day, and gosh, do I hope that will happen. But now? It won’t.
It’s a trick that you need to do with your deck. Black and Code the tape starting from 58:00:00, back time your show elements and then use Edit to Tape to punch in at hour 1. That’s how I’ve been doing it on Avid and FCP for years now.

August 23, 2006 at 8:49 pmNot with HDV – since you can only Print To tape and that means so inserts and no assembles.
I’ll live with it. -

I understand what you’re saying Kevin, but surely it’s true to say that FCP can OUTPUT timecode – via RS422. In the absence of an HDV deck with -422 control, this does little to help the problem. Firewire lacks the protocols to output timecode to HDV, just as it does with DV, but that’s not FCPs fault – it’s the fault of standards commitee that made sure that DV was never anything more than a ‘prosumer’ format. Betcha Sony was on it….

August 24, 2006 at 3:23 amUh… Ben,
You’re wrong. FCP does NOT output TC even with RS-422. Read it? Sure. Output it … No way.Mark

August 24, 2006 at 8:51 amRight. I just reread this thread in the cold light of day (not at 2am after an 8 hour studio show), and you are 100 percent correct – as was Kevin. FCP does not ‘output’ sequence TC, except to an external control surface via midi.
RS-422 does however solve this guy’s problem, if it were available on an HDV deck (as it is on DVCAM decks). I suppose it comes down to Sony deciding that HDV is a pro delivery format (which it isn’t) and releasing a ‘proper’ (read expensive) HDV deck with HD-SDI out and RS-422. Be useful.
