I dunno if this is any help but I had similar problem with the MBX on a windows system – it was OK prior to a firmware upgrade and then it went funky. Since the latest firmware update it all been good. So either there was a rouge firmware version OR the last update you did went a little wrong but I don’t know how you can force a firmware upgrade so maybe Kristian can help you there.

Good things come to those who wait…. are you going to use it on Premiere or FCP?

Unfortunately Adobe Premiere is not professional enough to recognise the fact that there are timecode breaks in a tape. Especially in the work flow that you are trying to use! You have to find workarounds – my workaround is to use FCP when I have that work model which IS pro enough to consider timecode breaks.
Are you capturing it as DV?

Hey Sam – I have always had gamma shifts when moving FCP created mov’s to Premiere on the PC. I have found it occurs without any BMD intervention and my research has found that it is a common problem. It also seems most people think its an Apple issue.

jeff – I have posted this a few times elsewhere here but will give you the very brief setup…
1/ in PPro’s HDV device control set the device to Sony generic
2/ set the deck to shuttle only. this is a menu setting on the deck that gives you the choice of of wind or shuttle.You will still get the occasional overshoot but it will be a vast improvement.

I have experienced the same thing with ProVTR and CS3. What I do before I start an export to tape is to open the capture window and select ‘options’ next to the ProVTR selector. This invokes the cable dongle so it will all work also returning current deck status. Then I can go do all the normal export to tape stuff. But it has a 1 in 10 chance of being 1 frame off either way.
So what I do is run a vhs across the output of the record deck with its timecode displayed and as it is outputting I stop the VHS and go back and check the accuracy. If it is wrong I abort the export and do it all again. This is a great help when I am exporting hours at a time.
I gave up a long time ago on the Premiere Pro 2 serial control as it wasn’t even close! … and I couldn’t be bothered trying it with CS3 as I know Adobe would not have fixed it; no surprises there…
But the Blackmagic thing is odd. You are using the Blackmagics RS422 port yeah? It works on my Extreme and Multibride ok except I can’t enter minus values so everything I export to digibeta is one frame off because I can’t enter -1. They are working on a fix for that now so hopefully you can rid yourself of ProVTR very soon.
Just as an aside, here is a warning!!! – turn autosave OFF in CS3 as it will stop your export when it kicks in!!! DOH!!!

I forgot to add that this machine under-sells itself a little in its product description. I says that it is a cheaper version of the full blown HDCAM deck because they have removed all the extra edit buttons and such. They may have removed all the buttons but the functionality is still there via a menu driven display. So in concusion it still has the same control feature set as a DVW A500. Just remember there are 2 versions of this deck; the HDW1800 and HDWD1800 – the later can play digibeta SD including up-convert but add another 20K to the price tag.
As a ‘by the way’ we use a JH 3 HDCAM deck with our FCP to ‘off line’ and it works great also incuding its downconverted SDI output and the Firewire output.

I have a HDW1800 and use it with Premiere CS3 and a Decklink Multibridge Extreme and it works exactly as a digibeta A500. Unfortunately my FCP suite is not HDCAM yet (only an Aja IO) so I can’t offer any experience with it on FCP but soon I will be installing a full FCP HDCAM system and am confident the deck will offer the same functionality as when I use a digibeta A500 deck with my FCP.
