HDW1800
Posted by Neil Hurwitz on September 7, 2007 at 10:35 pmHi All
Long time industry veteran new to this list with a question
Anybody here used this deck with FCP?
If so what if any issues did you have?
Does it behave like a good old A500?Thanx

September 7, 2007 at 11:39 pmDo you mean UVW1800? If so, lots of us use them. Never heard of HDW1800.

September 8, 2007 at 1:01 amGo search in the High End HD Forum for this deck. I asked about it 6 months ago when I was considering it and got all favorable responses. We never did purchase it as our workflow remains DVCPro HD from aqusition to mastering.

September 8, 2007 at 3:10 amI have a HDW1800 and use it with Premiere CS3 and a Decklink Multibridge Extreme and it works exactly as a digibeta A500. Unfortunately my FCP suite is not HDCAM yet (only an Aja IO) so I can’t offer any experience with it on FCP but soon I will be installing a full FCP HDCAM system and am confident the deck will offer the same functionality as when I use a digibeta A500 deck with my FCP.

September 8, 2007 at 3:42 amI forgot to add that this machine under-sells itself a little in its product description. I says that it is a cheaper version of the full blown HDCAM deck because they have removed all the extra edit buttons and such. They may have removed all the buttons but the functionality is still there via a menu driven display. So in concusion it still has the same control feature set as a DVW A500. Just remember there are 2 versions of this deck; the HDW1800 and HDWD1800 – the later can play digibeta SD including up-convert but add another 20K to the price tag.
As a ‘by the way’ we use a JH 3 HDCAM deck with our FCP to ‘off line’ and it works great also incuding its downconverted SDI output and the Firewire output.

September 8, 2007 at 2:50 pmI purchased the HDW-D2000 for my facillity. I really wanted to get the D1800 but it was months away from shipping and we needed a deck asap. I still wish I had the D1800 as it will do a 3:2 pulldown and the 2000 won’t.
The D2000 works like a charm with FCP. I sure the 1800 will work equally well. Just be sure to set your system frequency on the deck to the correct frame rate and match that with FCP. We recenly purchased the GEN10 tri-level sync from AJA to make working in 23.98 easier. That will get installed next week.Michael Alberts

September 9, 2007 at 12:15 amI have hired in the A500, the HDW 2000 and the HDW 1800 to output from FCP. They all worked well. The HDW1800 was probably the easiest to setup and use.
I have however noticed that outputting to HDCam had a one frame error on insert (V5.1.X). Just trim a frame before your in/ out markers in the edit to tape window to correct. This was in 50i. A quick test will see if the problem is there in 60i or 24(ish)P!

January 31, 2011 at 10:39 pmIf you are putting an HDCam tape in the machine and it is ejecting, it is probably that the transport has a problem and a Sony tech may have to look at the machine. Make sure you8 unplug the 9 pin from your I/O card (Decklink/Kona/Matrox etc) in case the eject command is coming from the card. Other problem might be putting a digi beta or HDCam SR tape in the machine
If it still ejects with the machine not connected to anything and with a proper HDCam tape, then it will need to be serviced.
