Just as a side issue regarding the subject line, when I need to import stuff into FCP I normally drag from finder. The reason is that in finder I can press the space bar on an item to preview it first. This is especially helpful when searching our sound effects server. I haven’t seen this functionality within the FCP ‘import media’ browser.

[David Roth Weiss] “Interesting!!! The full-page Matrox ad I’m looking at in DV Magazine at this very minute claims, “You get realtime 10-bit up/down/cross conversion – in hardware – for the ulitimate in speed and quality.””

That statement is in fact correct – for playback, not for capture!

[Curt Pair] “I went to your link… and it’s no longer valid!”

Hey Curt – it seems someone decided the link wasn’t in the Cow’s best interests, why I don’t know but if you copy/paste the link you can get there.

Incidently for those Cow people who disabled the link can you PM me and tell me what product it conflicts with that you advertise? I posted this thread as a genuine help for EX 1 users like myself and I have no personal interests in either that product OR Sony.

[Curt Pair] “I have a Deneke TS3 slate in which every camera shot the slate”

I use to use one of those a while ago when shooting digibeta but you sure can’t beat a $2.95 iPhone application!

Also remember what you see at NAB isn’t necessarily available immediately so there will be yet a few more months wait…

March 1, 2009 at 1:12 am in reply to: EX1 Audio And Firmware Updates

That is interesting Don – what puzzles me is how does a firmware update fix grounding issues? Sounds to me that it was more of a gain problem but who knows how clever Sony is? Maybe the EX series has nanoprobes running around inside doing some re-wiring?

March 1, 2009 at 1:03 am in reply to: HDLink 2x Scaling of SD Video not working???

Sean I don’t think the standard HDlink does upscalling. I have a few of them and when I connect the DVI out to a full HD plasma’s HDMI input it shows a half size image from a std def input so it must only ever outputing 1920×1080 and insert the 720×576 (PAL) into the middle.

I have installed a Cobalt SDI to component on this plasma for that very purpose (and still use the audio out of the HDLink) but it would be nice if the HDLink upscalled. Surely it only requires double pixelling into the memory buffer, but what would I know!

Hey Bob I have a Workgroup Hub which is the smaller version and it is fantastic! I only wish I was big enough to warrant the Broadcast hub and I would even make the back of the rack transparent so I could show it off!

February 22, 2009 at 3:29 am in reply to: Insert Edit on Digibeta problem FCP 6.0.5

[Michael Gissing] “I am amazed that FCP and AVID have never changed their methodology to something that makes proper insert editing possible.”

I agree and it shouldn’t be that hard.

The way the software works when editing to tape is…

    1. set play head on first frame of playback
    2. send necessary edit info to the deck including edit in and edit out points
    3. send auto edit command to deck
    4. monitor the timecode in the RS422 data stream (I could go into more detail here but I won’t bore you)
    5. Using the offset values in the device configuration (eg playback offset of -5 frames) start playback when required timecode is detected

So, all that is required to correct this problem is to alter step 1 and step 5 to read…

    1. set play head on the frame PRIOR to the first frame of playback
    2. send necessary edit info to the deck including edit in and edit out points
    3. send auto edit command to deck
    4. monitor the timecode in the RS422 data stream (I could go into more detail here but I won’t bore you)
    5. Using the offset values in the device configuration (eg playback offset of -5 frames) start playback when required timecode is detected minus 1 frame

This will allow the timeline’s playback to start in sync with the decks timecode but be actually running 1 frame before the edit (1 frame = 40mS and we only want 5mS so we are all good)

OK so the downside is that the frame displayed in FCP’s edit to tape window would be wrong but they could trick that to be correct.

Not so long ago I abandoned Adobe Premiere for it total lack of support for ‘proper’ broadcast features as it was only really catering for those that did weddings etc and either exported to DVD or back to a DV/HDV deck but it seems that FCP developers need to do a bit more for us high end users or at least use beta testers that require such features.

As a side issue, FCP is leaps and bounds ahead of Premiere when it comes to ‘broadcast requirements’. Its just the beta testing needs to be looked at. I have for years been a beta tester for high end products, mainly hardware manufacturers, and I have found some really ‘general bugs’ that were totally overlooked by their engineers. And also as a beta tester I was able to add suggestions to product features and enhancements which made it to the final products. This has turned me into a bitter and critical ole man when I see high end products get released without proper testing of all facets and lacking really simple but useful features.
