Matrox MXO2 and format conversion
Posted by Will Macneil on March 10, 2009 at 11:24 amI’ve got a Matrox MXO2 and FCP2 with a new MacPro.
I’m having trouble getting it to do the following (and I’m not certain it can.)
1. Convert PAL Anamorphic to PAL square 1024×576. I know this isn’t really a ‘format’ but I’d like to able to do this.
2. Upconvert PAL Anamorphic to 720p on capture via SDI (or any connection really)
Any thoughts?

The current drivers don’t support up/down/cross convert on capture … thats in the next release (amongst some other goodies!)
Shane’s been blogging about it already … read more at https://www.lfhd.comBest

Interesting!!! The full-page Matrox ad I’m looking at in DV Magazine at this very minute claims, “You get realtime 10-bit up/down/cross conversion – in hardware – for the ulitimate in speed and quality.”
Humm, it sounds as if they just plumb forgot about those pesky missing drivers.
Given that Matrox has been notorious for slow driver development an delivery over the years, you guys might be in for a rather lengthy wait. Good luck!!!

Yeah, the MXO2 upscales beautifully…surpassing my expectations. But I guess it is because I upconverted digibeta when I am so used to regular betaSP.
And David…their past record was bad, but that has all changed. They are now very quick with their updates. While now it only does pillar box, I know that they added anamorphic and that a release is due out for that update soon. No exact timeframe, but soon.

There is no such thing… you’d be looking at a software conversion to do this. SD video is 720×576 (in PAL land), either anamorphic or not. The only way to get 1024×576 is to convert to a file – QT for instance. The Matrox (and Kona, Blackmagic et al) won’t do this as it’s not a video signal that any kit (monitor, VTR) would recognise. Use Compressor.
As to the upconversion – I know it can do it, but I am surprised to hear that the drivers aren’t available yet. Certainly not the impression I got from the Matrox engineers on the Broadcast Forum stand.

That statement is in fact correct – for playback, not for capture!

What would I do without the ‘UNDO’ button!!!!

March 11, 2009 at 12:47 amHey Jason
As per the specs, the up/down/cross has always been there for output. It’s up/down/cross on input that is currently being added to the drivers. Its looking good … loving my MXO2. Very active development is good. Not a new box, just new features!
Great stuff.
