[Ben Holmes] “(incidentally, my 2.33 WILL capture 1080i50 ProRes HQ using the MXO2”
Yeah so will mine but after about 12 mins it spits the dummy… I use ProresHQ on my MBP to a FW800 drive when doing batch captures off my HDCAM deck knowing they are small (ish) grabs. I then take the drive into the MacPro and edit away… I just wish I had a second expresscard slot on my MBP. Do you think that will come out as a FCP upgrade?

I have a Matrox MXO2 running on a MBP 2.5g and Prores is a challenge for it, but maybe a ‘lossy’ Prores could be the alternative?… maybe thats the reason why… hmmmm

As mentioned earlier by another helpful cow, I also have this ‘writing’ box come up when exporting to tape and it is ALWAYS caused by a disabled video clip somewhere in the timeline.
I investigated this over time and spoke to Apple and they intimated to me that it was a FCP bug but obviously they are in no rush to fix it.

[Colin McQuillan] “Is your media coming in through an e-Sata or fiber card?”
Yes I have a Rocketraid 2322 connected to an external Mini-sas 8 TB raid array running raid 5. So maybe that is going to sleep a little bit do you think?

[Ken Nicholson] “Has anybody been able to do side by side comparisons of the MxM vs. the MxR, or for that matter the Kensington?”
I have all 3 including both Sandisk and Transcend 16 gig memory modules. Only the Kensington stands out over the others… and I mean that literally! (joke)
But really, they all work just fine and when I need to overcrank I just replace them with the 8 gig Sony supplied units no sweat! Gone are the days of having to do dump offs in the lunch break. In fact, gone are the days of having to take the lappy out on location!

Peter – the only unfortunate thing here is the way Adobe handles memory management exacerbated by Micro$ofts flawed operating system.
Adobe has this incessant need to cache anything and everything when loading and during use; this in the name of ‘fast performance’ during normal editing operations. But this comes to a head when you want to load large projects, something I think Premiere beta testers must not do very often, or, should I be more precise, do open large projects, report the problems, and are never addressed by Adobe. Why never addressed? Well this stems way back to the initial design of the app, and to fix it would require a total rethink which, to Adobe, is not worth tieing up their resources on, due to the small user base; and I am sure their market researchers have confirmed this noting that it would be unlikely they will ever build on that in the near future.
I was totally gobsmacked when I found out that the CS4 version of Adobe Premiere would no longer let you export without going via Media encoder; this confirmed to me that Adobe indeed DO NOT test their software on large projects, period.
So that is why there is a migration of high end users to Final Cut Pro. That app is Mac only but once you have been ‘majorily bitten’ by the inabilities of Premiere it really is worth the investment. As an example, look at my picture, that hair wasn’t grey until I started using Premiere to meet heavy deadlines and finding it couldn’t be achieved using the tools I had. And furthermore, all those FCP users are about to get a major reward which will then finally bring to an end to the FCP vs CS4 debate. Can’t say too much about that at the moment but in essence, buy a Mac, FCP and for Adobe’s benefit, After Effects and Photoshop; that way you will avoid the ‘Bollywood’ editing app AND Bill Gates pretend operating system.

What I am working on is a 26 part doco series all shot on HDV and all the titles etc are all HDCAM. This series is mastered for delivery on HDCAM.
What I am exporting to is an “archive drive”!!! Why would I want to leave 50% free? I am putting 6 programs per 1 Terra sata drive (in a sata dock) and then the drives go into the library, on a shelf stored 2 per ‘umatic tape’ box. Yep thats right, I have a great use for all those old tape boxes and 2 x 3.5″ sata drives fit perfectly side by side. The frightening thing is that the ‘umatic’ tape from the box use to be able to have a max of 1 hour but I am replacing the contents with about 20 hours of HD content. Think of the space being saved in there! – scary eh! But what a good idea I thought of, maybe I should be writing software….

[Zeno Pierre] “Is suicide illegal in California?”
I have never spoken to anyone successful at it to know.
In fact I have never even met a successful suicide bomber.
