Hey Chris – I went and purchased a Jonyjib cable and use my Fujinon Zoom controller from my old Betacam camera. Now I feel like a pro again and it impresses my clients!

    Old habits die hard…

Richard – yes there are settings within the machine as in ‘types of audio edits’ but that is mainly to avoid digital clicks caused by slightly different DC levels at sample sized portions. All broadcast digital machines provide for this ‘overlapping’ audio edit and gives the user an option for magnitude of the overlap.

But if there is no audio coming in at the point of edit then of course there will be a problem. If I do and audio edit to a source locked to the decks timecode and playing at the point of edit I get a perfect glitch free edit – in this case I am using an audio program called Nuendo which locks to midi timecode generated from a Unitor 8 SMPTE to midi converter. Also just doing a deck to deck edit will also provide glitch free audio.

But as I have said, not so with FCP as it is starting its audio playback late. IN FACT, it is starting its WHOLE playback late; VIDEO AND AUDIO – its just that you dont notice the video as it is parked on the first frame anyhow. It would be great if FCP allowed for a ‘split edit’ to tape where you could do the vision edit first and when the audio edit came along the timeline is already playing so voila – no 5mS audio dropout!

[Michael Gissing] “Sure, but I prefer to do the assemble at 10 seconds than at 1 minute. If I am playing out to tape, I have FCP patched and ready so it makes more sense to use the bars & tone in FCP.”

Yes and there is also the fact that Sony do not provide ‘stereo tone’ with their built in generator.

[Michael Gissing] “I keep an HD & SD project handy which is just bars, tone, board and countdown”

I do the same thing and the project is called “lineup” It is set with all the other generics including ID boards and leaders AND the bars and tone are 4 channel audio ready to go. The main sequence is just the bars and tone and I will put it in loop mode and do the initial recording manually on the deck while FCP plays over and over again.

The BIG problem with ‘stereo tone’ is that some parts of the world require left track broken and others (like here in Australia) it is right channel broken… so I just do 4 channels unbroken for Discovery and Nat Geo and never had a reject…

This is a BUG in FCP and has been there for quite a while. Without using big words I have to say ‘latency’.

As explained in another response here, FCP does an instant start when playing into the edit but the audio starts about 5 mS late (thats about an 8th of a frame) so you get this little ‘nothingness’ at the edit point.

I thought it was a PAL only thing as PAL is always treated as the poor cousin to NTSC because FCP is mainly debugged in NTSC but with Hi Dev now who knows where the priorities lie.

Here is my workaround… export the audio as a separate file and load it into another computer that can do a timecode chase and play it from there when doing the edit – yep very involved an a pain in the right testing123!

Maybe you should submit a bug report as they have never responded to mine regarding this issue. And ps. it is also a BIG problem editing to HDCAM!

Konnichiwa Kaku – what problems are you having with RED ONE?

I do work with RED and use a Multibridge Eclipse with FCP and it works flawlessly – and yes I do push the limits including integrating XDCAM and HDV in the same project and mastering to HDCAM.

I see many people have problems with RED and FCP mainly because they do not understand the integration.

[Chris Borjis] “[Michael Gissing] “feed bars from FCP and crash record the first ten seconds,”

Michael, just curious but why feed bars at all from fcp to black the first 10 seconds?”

…. AND the HDW1800 deck has a built in bars and tone generator….

“Does HDSDI require anything other than standard 75 ohm BNC cables?”

75ohm video cables will work but try and use double shielded (this is a broadcast forum so that should be taken as the norm…)

“For short runs is there any difference?”

    – short runs would be fine with any 75ohm eg patch cables

“And is there any need/benefit to using precision terminators versus standard ones?”

    – normal terminators would be fine.

Note – runs over 20 meters should use more precision cable. We use a cable type 75AY101 so google it.

    Hey Naiche

The Blackmagic device defaults to its maximum which is 16 channels.

When you go to capture just go to the capture settings window and deselect all the unwanted channels and capture away!

February 9, 2009 at 10:56 pm in reply to: Writing Video before edit to tape

    Hey Simon

This is a known issue (BUG) in FCP which Apple just don’t seem to want to fix. It is reported many times here on these forums.

It is caused by having ‘disabled’ clips in the timeline.

Delete the disabled clips and it won’t go thru that tortuous ‘writing’ process.

I guess its more of a case of the software engineers in a hurry to finish their days work so they can be with their beloved Ferrari’s and Porshe’s….
