    No, the JVC deck only inputs HDV via firewire. You’d need some sort of DV100-to-HDV conversion system. (of course, most NLE’s will allow that conversion).

    But then you’re faced with the incompatibility of HDV with HDV — you’d have to pick which flavor of HDV to support. JVC decks won’t play Sony tapes, so if you want to distribute 1080i or 1080p content and the customer only has JVC equipment, you’re dead in the water. Sony decks will play back JVC tapes via analog, so you could theoretically distribute 720p content that way.

    HD distribution is likely to just have to wait until there’s an installed base of HD-DVD or blu-ray players.

    The only “compatible” way to distribute content now would be to burn a WMV-HD file on a regular (or dual-layer) DVD, and have people play it on their computers. That’s a VASTLY larger market base than the HDV-owning market. If you wanted to distribute HD content on an HDV tape, you’d be limited to the 25,000-35,000 or so people worldwide who currently have Sony HDV cameras or JVC HD1xx cameras. But if you burned it to a Windows Media high-def DVD, everybody with a PC and Windows XP could play it. That’s tens of millions of households, a far more viable market base.

    They just couldn’t play it on their TV is all… they’d have to watch it on computer…

    Yes, and another name for it is DV100. It’s available on both platforms; on the Mac you get it as part of FCP-HD. On the PC, Avid freely distributes a “codec pack”, and one of the codecs it includes is DV100 (a.k.a. DVCPRO-HD). Avid’s codec is a Quicktime codec, not video-for-windows.

    That’s exactly what they’re planning on doing. And Serious Magic is planning on doing the same thing with a DVCPRO-HD-capable version of DV Rack — they’re talking to Panasonic now about providing that. There will be multiple ways to bypass P2 for those who aren’t willing to use P2 recording.

    FireStore was one of the first “P2 Partners” that were recruited. It is highly anticipated that they will do exactly what you said, and that yes, that would allow users to bypass P2 cards if they want to.

    Don’t try to base exposure on “eyeballing”, use the zebras. The zebras will give you a far more accurate measurement of your actual exposure than relying on a light meter will. Light meters work excellently with film, where the exposure curve is flat and linear, but on video it’s not perfectly linear, so a light meter becomes more of a tool for reference but not for critical exposure-setting. For maintaining ratios, as you said, that’s a perfectly appropriate use of the light meter on a video shoot.

    In video a waveform monitor gives you far more information about your exposure than a lightmeter would, or even a properly-calibrated production monitor. The waveform lets you see exactly what your signal is doing, what levels you’re shooting at, how your highlights and shadow areas are being handled, etc. The waveform is to video, as the level meters are to audio.

    I found 640 pretty much across the board, it was only under the very brightest and very darkest conditions (conditions calling for f/2.8 or less, or f/16) where the variance crept in. And even then, it wasn’t much — about 1/2 stop on the dark end, and 1/4 stop on the bright end. So yes, 640 is a pretty reasonable level to use (note: that’s for progressive-scan mode; the camera is a stop faster in interlaced).

    There was a thread on another forum where a guy fried his XL2 CCD block by shooting footage of a green laser. I’ve never had any problems shooting sparks flying from metal grinders, etc… don’t think I’ve ever shot any welding though. But lasers — that’s another thing altogether, so be careful around those.

    No, it’s a newly-engineered high-def lens that is similar in basic operation to the DVX lens, but isn’t the same one. It’s larger, longer, and engineered to high-def specs.

    Why can’t this lens have true witness marks and indicators in the viewfinder that represent actual distance?
    It will have true distance marks in the viewfinder and on the LCD. It’ll have readouts in three different modes: feet, meters, and in MF00-MF99 modes. Having the readout in feet will acutally give you a lot more precision in measuring distance than you would get with markings on the barrel. Plus, having the distance marks on the LCD mean you don’t have to turn the camera around to look at the lens barrel to see what your focus and zoom settings are — they’re right in front of the operator at all times.

    If you want to convert the lens ring to fully manual control with hard stops, the Century Optics ring should be adapted to let you do that as well.

    What about putting a true apeture ring on the lens? Or at least locating the electronic manuel control near the base of the lens?
    No true aperture ring on this camera. But for your other question: you asked for it, you got it. The aperture wheel has been moved to the base of the lens. The layout has been changed so that lens controls are all clustered up by the lens, etc to make them more intuitive.

    I think Panasonic should also make an optional ergonomic shoulder pad that can hold two radio mics, and an Anton Bauer battery. If this was designed from the inception by Panasonic instead of relying on outside vendors to provide these solutions, you would get a true system. Low mass on this camera and no shoulder mount throws out the advantage of body coordination and relies strictly on hand-eye coordination making for difficult pans and reduces overall steadiness.”
    Sounds like a good suggestion. Let’s hope Jan sees this message.

    This is a question that has either a very complex answer, or a simple answer.

    Simple answer is: 640 ASA/ISO in progressive-scan. But don’t rely on a light meter to set exposure. The speed setting varies depending on where you are in the exposure curve — at lower light levels the camera responds as 400, at higher light levels it responds at 800, but over most of the curve it’s 640.

    Look at Serious Magic’s Ultra keying software to see what can be done with DV.

    No DV camera will be ideal for greenscreen or bluescreen work — DV’s color sampling is very low. Even a $15,000 DSR450WSL would be less than ideal for greenscreen. You’d be much better off with 4:2:2.

    But if you can’t get 4:2:2, then use the best DV camera you can, and look at keying software that’s made to work with DV’s limitations — something like Ultra.

    It wouldn’t work. The anamorphic converts your footage to be 16:9. Trying to scale that to 4:3 would seriously compromise your image.

    The anamorphic adds a 33% wider field of view while converting it to 16:9, so in that sense it is also a wide-angle adapter, but only for 16:9 footage. It has no applicability for a 4:3 environment.
