Apple’s manual is wrong. The camera cannot use DVCPRO tape, nor DVCPRO50 tape. The only type of tape it can take is miniDV, and the only data it can record on that tape is miniDV.

Also, the requirements you’re looking for wouldn’t be coming from Panasonic, they’d be coming from the NLE manufacturers. How a particular NLE handles it will differ from NLE to NLE. So check with Apple or Avid or Canopus or whoever you’re planning on using, and check with them what the system requirements are.

It will be included with the camera, and I would expect that it will be available for download as well. The PC version requires a software driver and it’s available for download, so presumably the Mac version will be as well.

On playback, yes. During live monitoring? If it can, I can’t think of how. But once you record it you can configure the tape playback to deliver only the left or only the right channel.

I think there was a showing at a Final Cut Pro user’s group yesterday in New Jersey. Doesn’t help, but keep your eye out for things like that. The dealers won’t have them for a couple of weeks, but there are some preproduction models floating around that are being shown at events like that.

I think Ron answered this exactly. Currently in FCP5, you have to “Ingest P2”, which copies the files off the card, unwraps the MXF and re-wraps it into Quicktime before writing it to the hard disk. Canopus Edius 3 and Avid both let you edit straight from the card. Apple is aware that full MXF support would be preferable, but there’s no indication as to if/when such an upgrade might be available.

For wide-angle I’ve used the Panasonic and the Century .6 and Century .7. The .7 is huge, and while it’s zoom-thru, it’s expensive and not necessarily the sharpest edge-to-edge. The .6 is half the price, wider, lighter, smaller, but only allows partial zoom-thru (up to about Z60).
The Panasonic is fully zoom-thru, but it’s the weakest of the wide-angles, being a .8.
The Century lenses will complicate your quest for a mattebox, most matteboxes won’t work with the massive diameters of the Century lenses.
For matteboxes, I bought a CAVision and used it once before I sold it. Not necessarily a “bad” product, but it’s no Chrosziel. The Chrosziel is 3x the cost of the CAVision, and the Vocas/Century is about double the cost of the CAVision. I’m still shopping…
