Sure. Just shoot in 720p mode, *not* 720pN. It’ll record exactly as it looks in the LCD.

That would be magnificent if it were true. Do you have any information to lead us to be optimistic? I don’t know if Apple plans on doing it or not, but I haven’t heard them say that they will.

If you’re using an MXF-aware application (like EDIUS Broadcast) then yes it should import it all as one big clip.
If you’re using a non-MXF-aware editing app like FCP, then there’s no way around it AFAIK, you have to deal with separate clips.

What you encountered is the limits of 4:2:0 color sampling. All DV cameras will perform the same way. Pure colors (red and blue) get quantized at only 1/4 the resolution of the rest of the picture. If you shoot a pure red object (like you did), you get only 360×288 resolution. Chroma (color) information isn’t resolved at the same resolution as brightness (luma) is. Only the brightness is sampled at 720×576; color information is sampled at 360×288 in PAL.
In short, try not to shoot things that are illuminated as a single solid red or blue. Or if you have to, use DVCPRO50 mode instead, it has twice the color resolution of DV.

Unrelated possibly, but have you done a black balance recently? If you’re having issues in the dark tones be sure to do a proper black balance (hold in the white balance button a few seconds and it’ll go into the black balance process). Might clear it up a bit, and in any case it couldn’t hurt…

Yes it can work, after a fashion. But it’s limited.
Raylight does an excellent job, it preserves 100% of the original file quality. It just isn’t all that fast, is all. When a base Mac can handle two or three streams of HD in realtime, including transitions, it’s harder to justify getting 15fps on one stream in Vegas.
You can do it, there’s just better options out there.
For example, you can translate the MXF files from the HVX into .AVI files using Raylight, which lets you work on them in Vegas. I’ve done this many times (I’m a happy registered Raylight owner). And you can limp along in Vegas this way. But what if you want to output back to the card? Can’t do it. What if you want to do live streaming capture direct to the computer? Can’t do it.
EDIUS lets you do everything that P2 allows. EDIUS is full native HD editing; on the same system that delivers about 10-11fps in Vegas, I can easily have full realtime performance in EDIUS. EDIUS directly imports the MXF files, so there’s no lengthy transcoding process. EDIUS supports outputting files back to the cards. EDIUS supports live firewire capture.
So I’m not trying to talk you out of trying Vegas; when I’m doing a simple test or something I prefer using Vegas because I just really, really like the program, and for small stuff using Raylight and converting and importing to Vegas is fine. It’s just really limited, as compared to what a true native editing platform could do.

Yes. Use the “setting virtual p2 cards” menu option to navigate to where the “contents” directory is stored on your hard disk, and P2 Viewer will let you view & play the clips from that “virtual card”.
