Those super-cheapo prices are from the notorious Crooklyn scam shops. It’s false advertising. Look up the article that either ZDNet or PC World did on those shops. Bottom line: if you deal with liars, crooks, and thieves, don’t be surprised if they lie to you and steal from you. Is that really someone you want to give your credit card info to?
Also look up Don Wiss’ excellent photo site that shows the storefronts for these places, and again ask yourself if you want to go giving your credit card to a place like that.
The cheapest you’ll find an HVX anywhere in the US is about $4995. Any lower than that and it is almost unquestionably some sort of deceptive scam.

If it turns out that for whatever reason you just can’t import it no matter what, you can try P2 Log Pro from Imagine Software; it has P2 Repair features for situations exactly like this.

That volumes-not-mounting is a Mac OS quirk; P2 Genie can’t do anything about that. Panasonic has published a paper that’s supposed to demonstrate how to deal with it if not all volumes mount:

You could fit that on a 60GB hard disk. You certainly don’t need a terabyte SATA RAID! You could edit realtime 720/24p from an external firewire drive. Get 120GB or so to make sure you have some spare space, but this should be an under-$100 proposition.

Yes, this is a perfectly viable way to bypass P2 cards. As Shane said, it’s not uncompressed, but it’s the same DVCPRO-HD compression used by the VariCam.

It’ll never happen. Panasonic won’t produce a hard-disk-based camcorder.
Sony and JVC both do though; perhaps they were referring to one of those manufacturers?

DVCPRO50 is going to do a better job than DV, but the limiting factor in your equation is probably the s-video cable. Even so, there’s not a whole lot you can do about it, as the HVX doesn’t allow component input. You’d get better quality by dubbing from the Beta deck to a DVCPRO50 deck, component to component, but apparently that’s not under discussion, right? So with the HVX, dubbing a BetaSP tape, about the best you’ll do is going s-video in to DVCPRO50 on either the cards or a computer or firestore.
