If you want to key HVX footage, I strongly suggest shooting those segments in 1080p. 1080p delivers the most resolution the camera can create, and results in much lower compression so you’ll have fewer “mosquito noise” artifacts around edges.

The HPX500 shoots 1080p. End of story, it absolutely positively shoots progressive 1080p.
It gets recorded in the interlaced data stream of 1080i, but then again so does everything else (except HDCAM 24pSf, which is actually 1080p recorded in an interlaced data stream but without a pulldown frame).
Short answer: it’s a non-issue. Especially if you use FCP: record 1080/24pA, FCP will remove the pulldown frame when you import the footage and you’ll have native 1080/24p on your timeline.

That won’t help; Apple refuses to implement DVCPRO-HD support on the Windows version of Quicktime. What you need to do is what mvb said — get the dvfilm.com Quicktime Decoder; it’ll add the necessary missing support.

Redrock’s come out with a new “flip” module that fits between the camera and their adapter, and takes care of flipping the image for you (so the camera displays/monitors and records rightside up). They were demonstrating it at the Panasonic booth at NAB.

If you want extremely shallow depth of field, look into a 35mm adapter such as the Letus35, Redrock M2, Brevis, SGPro or other.

My understanding is that you can use any 2/3″ lens. The CAC is an option, but the HPX500 can use non-CAC lenses as well. So yes, DigiPrimes should certainly work.

Another thing to throw in there on pricing — there are a few things that’ll bring pricing down, such as quantity of units out there and competition. But another thing that I think may have influenced the price drops is: they’ve now got massive networks buying thousands of P2 cards at a time! All Fox owned & operated stations are going exclusively P2, the Australian Broadcasting Company is 100% P2, one of New Zealand’s national broadcasters, TV3, is 100% P2. India’s largest independent news/content producer uses hundreds of HVX200s and shoots everything to P2.
This means that they’re not answering to a few individual customers, they have massive corporate buyers strongarming them for the best price they can get. Frankly this is good for all of us; it brings prices down quickly and it also shows the guarantee of longevity. Panasonic couldn’t bail out on P2 even if they wanted to!
