As Gabriel said, variable frame rates can only be recorded in 720p mode to the P2 card. According to Jan, the camera will allow you to downconvert from 720p to DV tape. So if you shot 720/60p, and downconverted it, you’d get 50% slow motion DV footage on tape. What Gabriel is speculating on above is whether you could use 24p as your timebase to base the slow motion effect off of (meaning, 60p would yield a 40% slow-mo effect in a 24p project, or 50% slow-mo effect in a 60i or 60p project).
Keep in mind that 720p is designed to offer variable frame rates (including fast motion), but there is some capability for variable frame rates even in 1080 mode or in regular DV mode. 1080 and DV both support 60i, 24p, and 30p. 30P can be used as a mild slow-mo effect in a 24p project. And you can get 4p, 6p, 8p, 12p, and 15p frame rates in 1080 or DV also, by using the slow-shutter mode and then speeding up the footage in post (i.e., shoot with a 1/4 shutter speed, and play the footage back at 6x realtime, and you will have frame-accurate 4p footage). So in 1080 (or DV) you’ll have the ability to create 4p, 6p, 8p, 12p, 15p, 24p, 30p, and 60i. In 720p mode you’ll have other options, ranging from 4p all the way up to 60p.

It happens in the progressive scan modes — the slower the frame rate, the more the echo.
It happens because the audio needs to be delayed by two frames before being written to tape. So what you’re hearing through the headphones is 1/12 second delayed. You’re hearing “reality” and the 2-frame-delayed recording, and that’s what causes the echo.
The only way to “fix” it would be with noise-blocking headphones that block any live sound from leaking into the headphones.

Panasonic will charge whatever price the market will bear. If the market feels that the price is too high, they won’t buy them.
The great thing about the HVX is that it can use whatever technology — anything that can capture the firewire stream can be used to record with. If someone makes a device that captures firewire data to these Samsung flash drives, then you could use those instead of P2 if that’s your preference. You’re not locked into any one solution.

If you like your DVX, and can afford to wait a few months for the HVX to come out, I’d say that’s the way to go. It’ll be the most compatible camera, picture-wise, with the DVX, it’ll have a similar menu structure and similar image controls and all the same gamma curves, etc. It has a big LCD and native 16:9 chips… if you want to use it in standard-def, you don’t ever have to have a P2 card.
Also, there’s talk of a DVX100B coming out later this year. No mention of any changes it may have, except that it will employ a new manufacturing process that eliminates lead.

I’ve got some Power2000 batteries I got for my DVX a couple of years ago, and I’m not too happy with them, they don’t seem to last nearly as long as they should. I’ve got a CGR-D54 that I bought new for $90 from ebay seller “shimwass”, and it’s simply excellent. However, I also some of the DVXUser 5000mah batteries, and there is no better battery deal around. They are the real deal, and at $69, they’re very affordable too. Two of those will power a camera all day, especially if you put one on the charger while you’re using the other. I believe Jarred is also releasing a new 5600mah version, which would make it the biggest, longest-lasting battery available for the DVX.

Many sections of it will be 100% applicable, yes, but obviously some of it won’t. The DVC80 has a lot of the features of the DVX100, but not all. Some people seem to think the only difference is a lack of 24p, but there are several other features that the DVC80 doesn’t have as well. The sections on the DVD about comparing DVX next to film, and controlling strobing, obviously those sections won’t be applicable to the DVC80.
However, everything that the DVC80 does have is explained and documented in the book, so I’d say yes, it should be very helpful to DVC80 owners: if I were to do a DVC80 book, everything that I’d put in it is already in the current DVX Book/DVD. Just be aware that there’s more also, so some features that you see described in the book will not apply to the DVC80.

If you’re capturing through the firewire, the codec has already compressed the footage. The firewire output is compressed DV.

Saying the fields are identical implies that field one and field two contain the same data, which is of course not how it works. The fields were captured at the same moment in time (as opposed to interlace capture, where they’re captured 1/60 of a second apart from each other). But the data they contain is entirely different from each other — if they were identical, you’d just have low-resolution video (like CineFrame 25 and CineFrame 30). That’s the difference from true progressive — progressive offers a full high-resolution frame (whether it’s recorded as fields or not), whereas duplicating fields offers lower-resolution footage that offers the same temporal feel as progressive, but is, inherently, lower resolution.

If someone wants to make a firewire-streaming version of the holographic drive, the Panasonic camera will most definitely work with it. The holographic system may not be rugged enough or reliable enough for field use, but it could be an excellent tiny-cost way to archive footage! An hour of footage at 720/24p archived on a $1 gel (or whatever it is…) heck, that’d make shooting P2 *cheaper* than shooting HDV…
