  • Camera comparable to DVX100 (price and quality, any brand) w/Native 16/9…Should I go with Sony HDV?

I am figuring out my next camera step, and I will need 2.

I love my DVX100, but by the time I buy another plus 16/9 adapters for both, I could get something else.

GOOD AUDIO SECTION and 3″ VIEWFINDER ARE KEY.

    Thanks for any input.

New Panny P2 could be a stretch ….use w/mini DV for a few years until P2 comes WAY down?

Sony HDV doesn’t do 24p. So if you like the film look of the DVX100 you’ll not get it with the Sony. The Panasonic looks pretty tasty but it’s fairly expensive compared to the DVX100. Might be a good time to wait and see what happens.

If you like your DVX, and can afford to wait a few months for the HVX to come out, I’d say that’s the way to go. It’ll be the most compatible camera, picture-wise, with the DVX, it’ll have a similar menu structure and similar image controls and all the same gamma curves, etc. It has a big LCD and native 16:9 chips… if you want to use it in standard-def, you don’t ever have to have a P2 card.

Also, there’s talk of a DVX100B coming out later this year. No mention of any changes it may have, except that it will employ a new manufacturing process that eliminates lead.

The JVC GY-HD100U and Canon XL-2 are two cameras you should look up and think about. They both offer 24P recording similar to what you DVX does. The JVC is HDV, the Canon is DV. They both record anamorphic DV from a wide chip (not cropping like other cameras do) and do not need anamorphic adapters.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com is a good place to start for looking up details.

That being said, I think Panasonic and Sony both have higher quality cameras than either of those companies, but these cameras have some really nice features and are at least worth considering.
