The term is “volumetric lighting”, and the tool of choice would be Trapcode Shine.

I can’t comment on the grain, but Digibeta PAL should be upper field first, unless they transcoded it to a different field order.

Nice trick, except it will fog an entire layer equally. So if a layer is at an angle making one side closer to the camera than the other, this trick won’t make the layer fade into the distance. Which limits the possibilities.

In this case Simple Choker with a negative value would probably be more effective than Matte Choker.

Try scaling or rotating your interlaced footage without separating fields… You won’t like the results. Or try motiontracking or rotoscoping…
If you only do color treatment or mild effects, you can actually get by without separating fields, if you export with the same field order. If you mix and match DV and Digitbeta, it’s a different story. But if it works for you…

You could try deleting the preference files. Launch the app with Shift down (I think it’s Shift, otherwise try the other ones). You get a dialog asking if you want to delete prefs.
If that doesn’t work, remove and re-install I’m afraid.

Well… if your source footage is interlaced and you wish to apply effects to it that move pixels, (blur, rotation, scaling, etc.) you definitely want to keep field separation ON.
If the source is progressive, indeed you want to make sure field separation is OFF.

You could drag the composition you’re working with into a new one, and apply a mask to the layer in that comp.
