Are you rendering with compression? This could introduce a bit of softness.
Are you separating fields on import? Probably not, but I’d check nonetheless.

I like the extract filter for this because it makes it easy to access the ‘softness’. But Luma key will do also.

Not a complete walkthrough, but it’ll give you a good start – if you’re an advanced AE user…

But any particle system should give you the tools you need.

You can actually create a couple of workspaces and switch between them by assigning Shift-F10, F11 and F12 to them…
Pretty cool.

This is probably one of the most asked questions year by year, but still there’s no definate answer.”Well, you forgot to actually ask the question… but I’m assuming you need output of the video preview to a video monitor…
I’ve used a Matrox Parhelia for a while, which worked very well. Great image quality. But with AE 7.0 you really want a faster OpenGL 2.0 capable card, such as the nVidia 6800GT or up. If you do a lot of 3D work, you’ll be happier with on of those than with the Parhelia.
So I’d recommend getting a Decklink card with analog outputs, such as Decklink Pro or SP – and get one of the above mentioned display cards.

It could be anything. Are you previewing at full res? Are you doing OpenGL previews? You could always render using ‘current settings’ instead of best settings, which should use your preview settings.

Hi Walter,
You get two options: the full application (which also includes the render engine, otherwise you couldn’t render), OR only the render engine.
So if you install the full app, you don’t need to check the render engine separately.
The render engine only install is necessary when you want to create rendernodes without UI. The render engine doesn’t need a serial number, so can be installed on as many machines as you need.
In short, if you want to install AE on a workstation, just install the full version.

You can enable pixel aspect ratio compensation by switching it on – it’s a button in the bottom right of the comp viewer.

I was also told that Digital Fusion 5 was good.”Sure, Fusion 5 is excellent. But the full version is 5k… so if you don’t have the budget for SilhouetteRoto, I don’t see how this is an option.
