Hi Jack,
Great to have the creators of Keylight get involved around here 🙂 Keylight is an essential part of my toolset. I’m currently pulling mattes from DVCProHD footage (ugh…) and Keylight holds up fine. Although I’m also relying heavily on Red Giant’s Key Correct Pro for de-artifacting and occasionally a bit of noise reduction.

Noise that may not be visible in the source can be amplified by processing. Apply noise reduction before keying. Personally, I disable spill removal in Keylight, because it can bring out compression and noise also. Instead of spill suppression I use light wrap.
But seriously, apply Remove Grain before keying. It’ll help. You may need to enable temporal filtering, but that slows down rendering a lot, so i’d try without first.
If you’re worried about losing detail by the noise reduction, you could use the resulting keyed footage as a track matte for the original footage. That way only the matte is denoised, but the actual foreground isn’t.

Actually… It has nothing to do with the YUV to RGB conversion, since AE can deal with that well enough.
The Apple DVCProHD codec comes with FCP – and is Mac only. So the Windows machine can’t open DVCProHD files, since the codec isn’t part of the Windows version of Quicktime.

Well, I’ve had AE 7.0 lock up maybe two times ever. So it’s not that AE is unstable itself.
What kind of crashes? Lock-ups? Any error messages?
The first place I’d look at is RAM. If you have multiple modules of RAM in there, take all but one out and see what happens if you run AE for a while.
If it still happens swap it for another, and repeat.
This way you can test if there’s faulty RAM in the machine.
Another place to look at could be graphics drivers.

We seriously need more information. Fill out your profile for starters!
When you want us to address OpenGL issues, you could start with telling us what OS you’re on, what kind of machine, what graphics board and what drivers.
On the short term: you can’t save to older versions of AE, but you can disable OpenGL preview by switching to adaptive resolution.

Have a look at the scribbler plug-in that comes with AE. (I think that’s what it’s called, not near my workstation right now).
It’ll create the scribbly line and you can animate it to appear.

To actually answer the question:
Yes this machine should do quite well on After Effects, and most other things. Currently, I’d stick with AMD. If you can wait a month or two:

It looks like the new Intel Core CPU’s are going to be very attractive in power consumption, heat and pricing.
Intel Macs are nice, but if you don’t need OSX you’ll be spending twice the amount of money for an (arguably) nice case.
