    Hey:

I have a question that isn’t so much about AE, but about a decent system to run it on. Right now I’m using the computer that got me through college (which then was top of the line), and it’s starting to show its age.

The ideal machine, of course, would be a Power Mac G5, dual processor with 2 gigs of RAM, but I lack the funds to purchase a $2,500 machine along with replacing all of my PC based software. The machine I have now is an Athlon XP 2600 with an “astounding” 333 Mhz FSB, a “whopping” gigabyte of PC 2700 RAM, and a G Force 5200 video card. I’d like to stick with Athlon chips, but someone told me I would be better off looking at a Pentium. Before they told me that, the machine I was looking at was as follows.

Athlon 64 X2 4400 processor, 2 gigs of DDR 500 RAM, 2 serial ATA hard drives (one 100 gigs the other 300) and a G Force 7600 video card. The power supply and case I’m going to worry about later. Any input would be most appreciated.

How soon do you need the computer?

If you can wait till 2007 for native applications get an intel mac, you can run all you PC software through bootcamp and you still get great integration with most things, including Final Cut.

Not to mention in tests macs running windows, out performed PCs running windows.

    To actually answer the question:

Yes this machine should do quite well on After Effects, and most other things. Currently, I’d stick with AMD. If you can wait a month or two:

It looks like the new Intel Core CPU’s are going to be very attractive in power consumption, heat and pricing.

Intel Macs are nice, but if you don’t need OSX you’ll be spending twice the amount of money for an (arguably) nice case.

Hey thanks for the input everyone. I’m in dire need of a system now and can’t shell out the dough for a mac at present (which is ok because most of my clients are PC based anyway. Again, thanks for the input.
