If you mean by expressions, expressions aren’t currently able to sample a layers pixel values.
But if you just want to use the solid as an ‘optical filter’ to tint the layers below, you could play around with ‘blend modes’. Most notably ‘color’, or ‘multiply’.
There are other ways of accessing a solid’s color by applying a ‘fill’ effect and using the color of the fill effect to drive another expression.
But what is it you’re trying to achieve?

I’ve never tried this myself, so my insight on software RAID is from reading reviews. But I’ve seen numbers in the region of 50% CPU load on software RAID 5 (when doing 200 MB/s or more…).
RAID 0 seems a lot less complex than having to calculate parity bits, so software RAID 0 may not be that heavy on the CPU, but it’ll be there.
Since money seems to be an issue, it seems to be the only solution available for you at the moment.

Well, from what I understand code doesn’t rewrite itself to Universal Binary. Apparently programmers actually have to do the work.
But my guess would be that in the future AE will be available as an Intel Native app…
Until then, AE will run on an Intel Mac, but it will run as an emulated app under Rosetta – which might slow it down. To what extent I do not know.

My main workstation is equipped with 2 TB of RAID 5 storage, across 8 physical drives. For more security than RAID 0 you should look into RAID 5 or 6. (RAID 5 uses 1 parity drive, RAID 6 uses two, which means you could lose two drives and still be okay…).
For me it is a matter of short-term reliability. Even though I can re-render – if a drive breaks a day before deadline on a project with around 48 hours of combined rendering… I just don’t want to have to tell the client I had hardware problems. They don’t need to know any of that. So having redundancy in storage and machines is important to me. It costs, but the price of losing a client because I missed the deadline would be a lot higher.
In short I’d stay away from RAID 0 personally – and look into RAID 5 or 6 – and preferably with a RAID board that does hardware RAID, and doesn’t load the host CPU with the RAID calculations.

You can use Timewarp as an effect, or just do a timestretch on the layer. ‘pixel motion’ (the Kronos process) is also incorporated into the timestretch / frameblending system in AE 7.

Oh… ah… and an extra tip:
Since the Stroke plug-in is very limited, it can’t create strokes with different width for verticals and horizontals, which could add to the realism.
A quick solution is to create a solid that’s twice the width of the comp, and do a horizontal scale to 50% (leave vertical scale to 100).
Now draw your masks. If you apply stroke, you’ll see that there’s a variation in line thickness… A crude solution, but it works. One day we might get Illustrator brushes in AE, but until that day…

It is also included with 6.5 Pro, although I doubt you can still get that upgrade from Adobe.
In my opinion, upgrading to 7.0 Pro is well worth the investment.
