WHAT IS THE DEAL!!!
Posted by Midicon on October 23, 2006 at 7:02 pmHello Creativecow people….
I am just looking to buy a copy of AE 7 for mac… but i have been advised to wait untill intel chips take over as AE will not run because its not “universal”. I really don’t know what this is all about… also i am woundering why Adobe would release its new version knowing that this crossover was in the works and wouldn’t make the capibilities be universal… my office is going to buy all of us the big bad comps for video and motion graphics but what good are they going to be if they can’t use after effects… can somone please help me understand what is happening and whatis going to happen???
Thanks
Rob

October 23, 2006 at 7:15 pmWell, from what I understand code doesn’t rewrite itself to Universal Binary. Apparently programmers actually have to do the work.
But my guess would be that in the future AE will be available as an Intel Native app…
Until then, AE will run on an Intel Mac, but it will run as an emulated app under Rosetta – which might slow it down. To what extent I do not know.

Adobe was not told about the Intel chips. They found out when we did.

As Steve Roberts pointed out, Adobe didn’t know and Apple didn’t warn them.
In my opinion, Apple keeps making its sandbox smaller and smaller and doesn’t care to play nice with the other kids.
As Tim Wilson pointed out so well the other day in his post down below, just because Apple releases something doesn’t mean (nor should it) that Adobe has to change all their internal plans to try to rush something out.

October 24, 2006 at 11:54 amYou can run AE now on an Intel Mac through Rosetta. It’s a bit slow, but not horrible. Whenever Adobe releases a Universal build you can upgrade. Adobe’s upgrade prices are usually very reasonable.
Every time Apple changes something, it’s a pain in the ass for developers. You can’t really expect developers to drop everything and fall all over themselves every time Apple makes another change. The Windows plugins we wrote in 1999 still work with Windows. We’ve had to do FOUR different mac builds of the same software in that time. It ain’t cheap or easy being a Mac developer… let me tell you…
cheers,

October 24, 2006 at 1:11 pmI was in the same shoes your in with the Mac/PC bit. I picked up a MacBook Slow and I’ve been running AFX on the OSX side of it, which is GARBAGE.
I bought windows and a copy of AFX standard for Windows and it COOKS on that dumb little laptop — especially with Nucleo. Can you wait?

and the stone wheel I chiseled from a slab of granite still rolls. LOL. Come on guys. Also the sandbox comment applies as much to Adobe and Microsoft as it does Apple.
AE 7 works fine on my 2.66 Ghz Intel mac and it is FASTER that it was on the Mirror Door G4. It will even be faster once Adobe gets around to making their apps, run native.
I’m sure Apple isn’t making change to be a pain the developers. Change maybe a pain, but I prefer development instead of contentment.

October 24, 2006 at 7:20 pmI think that the result of all this is: as Apple acquires and develops more applications, it becomes less a partner and more a competitor to companies such as Adobe.

October 24, 2006 at 7:47 pmDefinitely, I was saying as much back in the days of the repackaging of the stand alone apps. into FC Studio and Creative Suites.
I also thought this was a laugh from Microsoft. https://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=2164

… “persuading” more people to try out Apple’s own apps like Motion and Final Cut Pro. It’s probably as much of a business move as anything else.
