November 19, 2006 at 2:24 amNice video I liked it very much not come across it before.
Anyone else think it would have had to been rotoscoped?
I like the paint parts, I cant help but wonder if someone really did throw some paint about and film it…no reason not to would of been a giggle as well. Perhaps it was done using some 3D program or particle program, but I like the idea of creating some of it the “old fashioned way”.some links on recent roto’d films, in case you not come across it before.

November 19, 2006 at 2:37 amThe paint splatter is ….drum roll……Paint splatter 🙂 Search the archives here for splatter, ink, etc and you’ll see it’s been discussed quite a bit. If you think about it, you can use particle systems that would take hundreds of man hours and render time to get right or you can set up some white card in the sun and throw black paint on it. Take this footage into AE, invert it and use it as a track matte.

November 19, 2006 at 12:15 pmStrange styl. Couldn’t say I liked it. Anyway, most likely it’s a lot of rotoscoping and mask cleanup work. You can get some help by properly dressing your artists and applying certain kinds of UV reactive makeup that will produce more or less “flat” areas when lit with blacklight lamps and filmed, but you still have to isolate and clean the different colored parts. For the splats – just like Chris said. Nothing can beat the simplicity of shooting this stuff as practicals.

Except the Queens of the Stone Age clip is way more sophisticated – great job by Shynola.

November 20, 2006 at 2:16 pmCould this Kasabian vid have been done using a combination of heavily contrasting makeup/clothes, etc. and then batched live trace in Illustrator/AE to separate the elements into keyable portions you could then change the colour of later?
I imagine the outer edges of each character was roto’d though, to enable the black BG. It would take frikking ages to roto each bit of detail on the clothes and individual teeth though wouldn’t it!?
