more of this and i’ll become a vegetarian – Thank G_d for COW

It must be my ignorance that’s confusing you. We had been offered the older MX-70, widely used in the region, and not the HS400A, primarily because guy who plans all our equipment is a lights and sound specialist and knows less about broadcast than i do. We don’t really have good TV / broadcast technology people over here and i’m being pressured to order equipment as soon as possible.

I’m looking forward to the AJA Ki Pro, because i’m mostly a filmer (and lecturer on documentary film, propaganda and public diplomacy) using HVX200s and FCS, so the Ki Pro could be ideal – though i’m quite happy with my firestore, it has its drawbacks.

For the past two weeks now, i’ve had to brush up on broadcast equipment and i feel a little lost at times. The other, main problem we have is that we work with a TV station, that, like all others here, lacks skills and motivation and a lot of the shots and cuts look unprofessional. That’s why we want – actually: need – the possibility of doing additional, ‘corrective’ mixing after the recording. And, of course, we want to do it on a tight budget.

Aprt from the talk show, which requires, IMHO, a 5-6 Camera set-up, we also want to be able to frequently film and mix lectures and seminars by ourselves. I suggested the option of using remote cameras and we were offered the Sony BRC300, which we now want to use as our main cameras (4 of them) plus one ‘real’ camera on a dolly.

Do you know if these BRC300s are suitable? They look a bit flimsy to me.

    excellent, thax,
my colleague likes it, because we could save on the preview monitors.
It’s not easy to convince the money people that we’ll still need good monitors for the mixer.

    thanks, jeremy,
you just gave me a brilliant, nay, revolutionary idea: I’ll use tape!
the only other time i did use tape before and had filled the P2 cards with DV (2 hrs on each card), it worked fine, and since my final product is DVD, i doubt anyone will notice the difference.

    thanks, Thax,
recording each to separate DV tape is kinda what i was trying to avoid, unless you can recommend any ‘affordable’ recorders. The ones we have been quoted here all start at 10K $. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to get good 2nd-hand stuff here.
Do you know if the Datavideo DN-300 Recorder/Players are any good for this purpose? Or, for that matter, the Datavideo mixers?

thanks for the advice, it turns out that 1 of the video files was somehow corrupted. i transferred all files manually via finder and found the one that kept on crashing the system – and then lost it / didn’t transfer that one.
after formatting the card in the camera, i shot more stuff and transferred (export via P2CMS) everything as usual without any problems.
my supplier simply told me that “..it happens” … i just hope it won’t happen too often.
    thanks anyhow

May 12, 2008 at 8:35 am in reply to: RE: HVX 200 outdoor settings

i just got back from shooting some ‘newsy’ footage – frequently changing from out- to in-doors, no time to do white balancing, let alone set up lights or reflectors, in the azerbaijan midday sun, and decided to go full auto with the preset scene file 1 on 1080/60 for the first time (it wasn’t that important, so i could take a risk) and all i tried to work with was the ND filters and the WB presets. I even used the zoom button, which i usually don’t, and, also for the first time, the OIS.
… it looked great. i still can’t believe how great it looks.
skin looks like skin, sky looks like sky, rich contrasts … everything i could have asked for in a one-person, no-preparation shoot.
I’ve had the HVX200 for 5 months now and i’m loving every minute of it.
Call me crazy, but with all other cameras i had before, i used shutters all the time, with the HVX200, i only use as a gimmick, together with odd frame rates and wild chroma settings.

    Thanks a lot,
My dealer just convinced me to go with more HD and is offering me very good rates for a big RAID setup.
The VXA certainly sounds great, but i would have to buy two drives as we work out of two offices plus tapes, and it seems that for the next year or so, it’ll be cheaper to use two big stationary RAIDs and two portable HDs.
Hoping that there could be few more options later this year …

are there any you would recommend?

also: what would be the best procedure (or software) for burning the blu-ray as a) data (MXF or QT) and b) film ready to view on blu-ray players?

noah, you have a very liberal concept of ‘affordable’

actually i’m being a little stupid here, i guess, i wanted to avoid spending too much on a) a nice HD monitor and b) at least one more big RAID for back-ups.

Thank for letting me know, however indirectly, that there are some things i simply need to spend more money on.
