storage for 5-6 camera mix in post
hi all,
we – Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy – are setting up a studio in our main auditorium, producing a talk show and recording lectures and debates. We are not ‘live’ and want to use 5 remote / robotic cameras with a Panasonic mixer, but would like to store all camera feeds for additional mixing in post.
Is there an affordable storage solutions that is not as expensive as buying a professional recorder for each camera? I should be low broadcast quality, but better than DVD-Recorder quality.

Record each camera’s output to a separate DV tape.

recording each to separate DV tape is kinda what i was trying to avoid, unless you can recommend any ‘affordable’ recorders. The ones we have been quoted here all start at 10K $. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to get good 2nd-hand stuff here.
Do you know if the Datavideo DN-300 Recorder/Players are any good for this purpose? Or, for that matter, the Datavideo mixers? -

my colleague likes it, because we could save on the preview monitors.
It’s not easy to convince the money people that we’ll still need good monitors for the mixer. -
I am confused. If you are using the new Panasonic AG-HS400A, it will display all camera inputs on a single multiviewer output – meaning you can get one cheap DVI monitor, and see program, preview, and all 8 inputs on one monitor.
The future answer for you will be the AJA Ki Pro, which is $3495 US street price, and will record each camera on hard disk (one per camera), which will be native ProRes422, so you can edit right away after recording.

It must be my ignorance that’s confusing you. We had been offered the older MX-70, widely used in the region, and not the HS400A, primarily because guy who plans all our equipment is a lights and sound specialist and knows less about broadcast than i do. We don’t really have good TV / broadcast technology people over here and i’m being pressured to order equipment as soon as possible.
I’m looking forward to the AJA Ki Pro, because i’m mostly a filmer (and lecturer on documentary film, propaganda and public diplomacy) using HVX200s and FCS, so the Ki Pro could be ideal – though i’m quite happy with my firestore, it has its drawbacks.
For the past two weeks now, i’ve had to brush up on broadcast equipment and i feel a little lost at times. The other, main problem we have is that we work with a TV station, that, like all others here, lacks skills and motivation and a lot of the shots and cuts look unprofessional. That’s why we want – actually: need – the possibility of doing additional, ‘corrective’ mixing after the recording. And, of course, we want to do it on a tight budget.
Aprt from the talk show, which requires, IMHO, a 5-6 Camera set-up, we also want to be able to frequently film and mix lectures and seminars by ourselves. I suggested the option of using remote cameras and we were offered the Sony BRC300, which we now want to use as our main cameras (4 of them) plus one ‘real’ camera on a dolly.
Do you know if these BRC300s are suitable? They look a bit flimsy to me.
