You need to make your exported size 1280×720. If your footage is DVCProHD, then it’s actually 960×720, which is why it looks squished on export.

I think it took a lot more than 20 programmers. And they were probably working on it before FCP 6 came out. So I think your $4 mill cost estimate is quite low.

Also, the cost of programming has to include the cost of putting those programmers in front of their computers. and networking them together. And paying their health insurance, 401k, keeping the lights on for them, air conditioning, cleaning the waste baskets, vacuuming the carpet once in a while…

[Zane Barker] “As for the BlueRay support, how hard is it to understand that BlueRay is NEVER going to catch on like DVD has. Im willing to bet the the growth of online distribution of movies (things like Netflix, Blockbuster, AppleTV, Hulu etc etc is growing faster then the growth of BlueRay.”

I agree. The market for BlueRay hasn’t really gelled. At least not yet. And the licensing fees are still quite high.

I do expect to see BlueRay as a screener for festivals and art houses, though. Like a poor man’s DCP. But screeners don’t need menus, they just need to play when you tell them to.

the format war of HD-DVD vs BlueRay ended up with VOD and online downloads as the winners. Meanwhile the public yawned, rolled over and clicked over to Netflix, iTunes and Hulu.

You know if the new speed change method finally ends all of these stupid arguments (which I always seem to get sucked into!) about whether or not FCP should ripple the timeline or arbitrarily trim your clip, well, that alone is worth it!

  • I think you would definitely be jumping the gun. You should wait till at least FCS 5 or 6. Or maybe even 10. Why put up with single digits in your software versions if your upright Moviola is still working?

[Erik Lindahl] “- The new “speed tools” in FCP is to be honest a joke. The rendering quality is so poor that no one in their right mind will use it. We are still forced with clumbersume round-trips to After Effects, Motion or Shake.”

How do you know? How long have you been making speed changes in FCP 7?

In my book the speed changes in FCP finally became usable in v4 or v5.

BTW, I see very crappy speed changes on scripted TV and even in feature films with 7 figure budgets all the time. Perhaps it’s harder than we think.

[Erik Lindahl] “- It’s very nice they develop the ProRes codec but it’s about time they look into Uncompressed alternatives (why can’t we get a 4:4:4:4 uncompressed workflow?). Where is a higher than 8-bit RGB workflow or some RT-effects working with uncompressed RGB files? Or perhaps an uncompressed format that has alpha-channel support?”

What’s wrong with compressed formats? HDCam SR and D5 are compressed. DPX and Cineon are compressed (through a trick of using log color space). TIFF and EXR can be compressed. If you need an uncompressed format with more than 8 bits and an alpha, do what most of the major shops do and use TIFF, EXR or DPX. These formats have been available for years, and the workflow for them is well established.

[Erik Lindahl] “- Where is the Shake replacement? No, Motion is not the answer.”

Like it or not, I expect that Motion will be the answer. Download the demo of Conduit from DV Garage, and you’ll see what I mean. For my money, nodal compositing inside of Motion would be a good thing. A very good thing! YMMV.

  • [Paul Harb] “Media Manager, a trim mode that actually is worth using”

I’ve offlined and onlined dozens of shows, including 35mm film, using FCP. It’s my experience that the weak point in FCP’s media management is largely the user.

Could it be easier? Yes. Could it be more intuitive? Yes.

But if the material is properly logged to begin with, the offline to online works. If all of my reels are named “001” and all of my media files are named “Untitled”, well, that’s not the fault of Apple’s programmers.

For my dollar trimming in FCP’s timeline has always beat Avid’s trim window. And I don’t know why anyone would use FCP’s trim window, when you can trim dynamically in FCP’s timeline. Perhaps that just a matter of taste.

[Paul Harb] “It has become painfully obvious that Apple doesnt care too much about professional editors in contrast to iPhones, iPods, and iTunes.”

Apple makes most of it’s money on just those products. They will ignore them at the peril of perishing as a company. The fact that they seem to find time to still make pro apps, pro workstations and servers is a testament to their commitment to those markets, even though they don’t bring in that much profit.

Look at IBM. When the pro workstations & laptops didn’t bring in enough profit, they spun the business off to concentrate on the things that do bring in big profits. Look at Compaq. They’re now a division of HP because they couldn’t earn enough profits to keep afloat.

If iPods subsidize the development of FCP, I’m all for Apple putting those out front!

SAS controllers from either Atto or Areca are the way to go. Atto has first rate tech support. I’ve never had to use Areca tech support, so can’t compare. High Point is garbage. I’ve heard good things about the Cal Digit.

  • AE supports 10 bit media quite well. It sounds like your filmout house does not. Or maybe they just don’t know how to use AE.
