I haven’t done this with HDV, but it shouldn’t be a problem as long as the deck has SDI for input.

I fear that Mark & Shane may be soft-peddling this a bit. If you need to match back to the original .r3d camera files for mastering to film or SR tape, then you’re really hosed.
When you work with any tapeless media, your original camera files are your “negatives”. You need to maintain your relationship to those original file names, and you need to maintain them across drive crashes, project file corruptions and other unhappy events.
When you rename your clips in your FCP project, you’re only 1 mouse click away from loosing that relationship forever. If you start up FCP and it tells you it needs to relink some media and you click “continue” instead of “relink”, then you’ve lost that relationship.
Do not rename your clips. FCP gives you several columns in the browser to use for the kind of descriptions that you need to organize yourself. Keep those stupid, random filenames for the day that disaster strikes.

Actually, Atto’s customer support is fantastic. It’s up on the same level as Aja’s support. That, plus the fact that the products actually work and deliver what they promise is worth the extra cost of the card.
My own experience with High Point is enough for me to never buy one again. It’s crap.

There are 3 sourcebooks that cover the NYC video/film communities: MPE, NYPG and NY411. Between them they list most of the post houses, dub houses and labs in town. Get hold of them and start calling, writing or emailing!

I would recommend that you read your HVX manual. It should explain the frame rates that the camera records, and that camera can only record 1080 as 60i, 29.97.
If you record 30P or 24P, your progressive frames are recorded inside of a 60i, 29.97 video stream. This is explained in the HVX manual, and it is not exotic or unique to that camera, it is fairly common with 1080 formats and is a legacy from tape.

Why does this worry you? It’s just a curve.
Audio is inherently logarithmic. FCP is drawing log curves on its audio keyframes for this reason.

FCP 5.0.x is not really compatible with Intel Macs. This is very widely known and well documented. The first version of FCP that was fully compatible with Intel was 5.1, which was released with much fanfare for just that reason.
If you want FCP to not crash unexpectedly on your Intel Mac, you’ll need to upgrade. The current version is 7.0.
