With automatic keframing off you need to manually add the keyframes before changing the shape. Otherwise the last keyframe will have your changed shape, not the shape that you set that key for.
It might be better for you to turn on the automatic keyframing, then a new key will be made every time you change the shape.

Do his captures from the DVCam tapes match the TC from the HDCam tapes? Check the TC of the QT files against the window burn to see if the minutes and seconds line up.
If so, he may be able to export an EDL & use Cinema Tools to convert the EDL from 30 to 24 that can be used for an online. If not, he may be SOL.

Is that Final Cut Studio 3 (aka FCP 7) or Final Cut Pro 3? Big difference.
You might try to find some tutorials on lynda.com and at rippletraining.com. There are also tutorials on the websites of some plugin & VFX software companies to get you started with their products.
If you’re serious about VFX in general, you should read the “Encyclopedia of Visual Effects”.

What does Iconix recommend? My guess is that you’ll have to buy something from Cineform.

When you output an EDL from FCP you have an option to sort by “source” or “program”. both EDLs will contain the same information, but the shots will be sorted in a different order.
“Source”, AKA a “C” mode list, sorts by tape number & TC, “program”, AKA an “A” mode list, sorts in the same order as the shots in your timeline.
Make sure that your giving the DaVinci an EDL sorted by “program”.

If you’re like me, roughly 400-500 of them are offering to enhance your mojo, another 100-200 are from nephews of recently deceased officers of the Nigerian national oil company asking for your assistance in recovering their “inheritance”, 50-100 are notifications that you’ve won a lottery in Holland (or Ireland, for a change of pace), and 20-30 are offering you bigger boobs. Most of the rest are offering you low interest mortgages.
