Contact the National Archives to see if you can get the newsreel material in HD. That would be a big help to you.

This is how fast the data needs to move over the wire between your storage and your Mac.
No offense, but it sounds like you need some technical help in setting up a proper storage system. You should really look for someone who has experience setting up video editing systems to help you with this.

You need to rotoscope the truck out of the background and place the title between the layers.

They use special security video systems that are purpose built for the task. Some record to VHS tape, some record to hard drives, some record to other medium, but the systems are designed from the ground up as security video systems.

Most video formats are YUV color space. It’s usually to your advantage to stay there if you can. Shifting back & forth can cause changes in gamma.

It’s not normal for me. I’ve been using FCP more or less daily for over 8 years, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen that.
Try repairing your disk permissions. Also check the permissions on the drive that you’re saving your project to. Make sure that drive is formatted for Mac OS extended, not for Fat 32 or NTFS.

Open up the graphic in Photoshop, add an alpha channel to it with black where it’s supposed to be transparent and white where the logo is supposed to show, and save that as a .tiff, .tga or .png. Then use that in FCP.

I’m working on an 8 core with Snow Leopard. Everything seems to be working fine. I waited until there were new drivers for the Decklink before I upgraded, though.
