Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy Title Question

  • Posted by Nic Genovese on November 21, 2009 at 3:24 am

    Hello,

I am wondering if anyone could wither point me in the right direction to a Video tutorial or simply explain this technique to me. Here is what I’m trying to achieve. Ok, So how do you make object overlap titles without green screen filming. For Example; A truck drives by and it appears as if the title goes Behind the the truck as the truck drives by. I have fooled around with my own ideas but have not gotten the results i hope for. My technique is using a Wipe Video Transition and timing it perfectly to kinda create the optical illusion. I am using Final Cut Pro Version 6.01. Here is a Example of what I’m trying to Achieve.

This is My personal Video and as you can see at 15 Seconds In i tried using my own technique. It does look alright, but you can see the faults when you freeze frame it. I have been told it is impossible to make it perfect but i am almost certain that there is a better way of doing this. Thank you for your time. I appreciate it.

You need to rotoscope the truck out of the background and place the title between the layers.

Thanks for your quick response. Is there a Easier way of doing rather than Rotoscoping video at 60 fps in a 10 sec clip? Im not very familiar with this technique but it seems extremely time consuming. And is there even a way of doing this in FCP?

You might want to see if you can do this in Motion.

The other tool that is particularly adept at doing this is After Effects. But even AE’s built-in roto tools are limited. A better roto tool is a plug-in for AE, called Silhouette. And Silhouette has a much more accurate motion tracker, too.

A simple mask-wipe will work as an object moves in front of the text.

Chris has it right. As I see what’s going on in the video it was just a simple wipe to remove the text as the body moved past.

    Nic…

If you freeze frame the shot you might see the flaws, but people aren’t going to scrutinize things that closely and you can get away with some slight inaccuracies.

However, if you’re doing this effect with something that has a complex edge and it’s taking place over a longer period of time, then you’ll have to consider creating a mask and animating it as needed, and that means doing roto work.

I did one for an insurance company commercial that involved a mom and two kids that took five hours to rotoscope. It was a three-second clip. The little girl had a pony tail that flopped about as she ran.

It was the only way it could be done, other than painting the side of an entire SUV green. Then again, it might have been cheaper that way.
