Motion does all of its work in RGB color space. FCP prefers to work in YUV color space (depending on what codec you’re working with). When you move your footage from YUV to RGB and back again, you get that gamma shift.
What I do is bring the titles in without the background video, & drop it on top of the video in FCP.

Actually, I think what FCP 4 needed for RT Extreme was a graphics card that used Open GL. And I think that a lot of the PCI based graphics cards lacked this feature.
Of course, I have no factual reference to back that up, so I may just be talking out my ear…

This is just bad workflow. You should lock the edit first, then start playing with complicated effects. If they think they need to see it as a work in progress, you explain that they don’t because it will take 4X or 8X as long to lock the picture, and 2X or 4X as long to pick the look.

You’ve got it right. PCI-X & PCI-E are not compatible. If you just want to jump into a dual-core, I think the only cards available now are AJA’s Kona LHe, which does both HD & SD, or the Black Magic Decklink Extreme, which is SD only.
If you only need SD, though, maybe you’d be better off with an IO for the short term?

Welcome to the wonderful world of rotoscoping! Before computers, matte artists had to literally trace each mat one frame at a time onto tracing paper. Now that we do it on computers, it’s a little less labor intensive, but not much.
If you have Motion or After Effects, both have good mask tools that can be used to cut your mattes. If not, take a look at Silhouette Roto.

I think it depends on whether you have device control set to “non-controllable device” or not. If device control is on, then I think it should stop when it runs out of timecode. If device control is off, then it’s not looking at TC at all, & it’ll just keep running till you tell it to stop. Or your drives fill up.

BTW, most people call this the “Ken Burns” effect, which ticks off a lot of other people, but if you were to search for “Ken Burns”, you’d find quite a few recent discussions similar to this one.

Oy! No offense, guys, but I’ve never seen so many different ways of using a hammer to drive a screw!
FCP has a nifty “find” command that works differently depending on whether you’re using it in either the timeline or the browser (that window with all your clips & bins, for you recovering Avid types). To do this, you want to be in the browser.
1) In the Browser window, select the sequence(s) you want to check. If the sequences are in a bin, you should put the Browser in list view, & twirl down the bin’s twirly thingie (isn’t that what Mr. Spock called it?) so that you select them in the main project, not in a separate bin.
2) Hit command-f (or choose Find from the Edit menu).
3) The Find window will open. Search should have your project name in it. Change For to say Used Media (or Unused Media, if you prefer). A little checkbox will appear that says “in selected sequences”. That box should be checked.
4) If you want to search for any specific criteria, like clip name, reel number or something in a comment column, use the menus & entry field at the bottom. Otherwise, click the Omit checkbox.
5) Click the Find All button on the right.
6) A new window will open up with the results of your search.
7) Go eat some leftover turkey, you’ve worked hard & earned it!Arnie
