2 ways off the top of my head:
1- Place your photo in it’s own sequence. Animate the photo to your hearts delight. Nest that sequence in your original timeline & use either the crop tool in the motion tab, or a garbage matte to crop it down to the size you need in your PIP effect.
2- Place your background, full frame image on V1. Use the “Shapes” generator in the viewer to place a rectange (or square, oval or circle) on V2 in the place you want the PIP. Place your photo on V3, set the composite mode to ‘track matte alpha’ and animate.
And while I was typing the above, a 3rd way popped into my head! Place your background on V2, and the photo on V1, then use a garbage matte to cut a hole in the background & animate the photo underneath it.

?!? Missing lines, perhaps? What I think Shane meant was the 6 missing lines of video will not be seen on a regular TV because they’re in the overscan area.

I think you could also export an image sequence. .tga, .tif, .png, .pct can all carry alpha channels. Check with the other editor to see if any of those formats are good.

Catherine, this is a very common problem for people who don’t have a proper monitor set up for FCP. Look at the toolbar on the left side of your browser window. Click the “search posts” button below the cow’s head & search this forum for terms like ‘pixelated text’, ‘text pixelated’, and ‘video monitor’. You’ll find a vast wealth of postings just like yours.
You need to connect a video monitor to your FCP system & judge the quality of your graphics on that monitor, not your computer monitor. Please consult your FCP manual to see how to connect the monitor (and speakers!) to your camcorder, video deck or capture card.

There are weekly threads on this in the Motion forum. Why not hop over there & search back over the last 2 months? Bear in mind that if you’re only using SD, you don’t need the biggest, baddest, most expensive card.
