White ‘artist’ tape- around $2 or $3 a roll at Pearl Paint in New York, and a Sharpie- maybe a buck and a half. I used these to label 4 hard drives & 6 power supplies (there was also a DVD burner & a different model HD) to avoid this kind of thing before flying to Moscow.

It’s called a lower 3rd, because it’s in the bottom 1/3 of the video screen. If you have Motion or Live Type, they come with many animated templates for lower 3rds. You can also build non animated ones very quickly with Photoshop or Gimp, or use the Title 3D generator, with the matte generator in FCP directly. There are many ways to make them, and it only depends on what you want them to look like & how you want them to appear & disappear.

Nope. you could never play a 35mm shot back from a laptop minutes after it’s in the can. I won’t get confused at all! And films won’t be distributed on 35mm in a few more years. They’ll still be shot on 35mm, but distribution will be mainly digital sometime in the next decade. It’s a matter of economics and setting standards.

We’ve just wrapped shooting a feature on P2. 23 hours of footage, which is archived onto 72 DVD DL disks, at around $1.80 per. And a 2nd set of DVDs for redundancy. Compared to, say, 138,000 feet of film? 36 DVCPro or HDCam Cassettes? And we can edit & create scratch effects shots with our native footage on a laptop, in the field.
No, I don’t think P2 is impractical or overpriced.

Aha, that I don’t know about. If the licensing information is in your Home folder, you could simply make new user account, and install FCP 5.1.2 under that account. but if it’s in the library at the root level of your system, it could be an issue.

I think you just need to rename your ‘vintage’ copy to something like “Final Cut Pro 5.0.4”. But I’d do a backup of the system drive (or at least your applications folder) first, just to be on the safe side.

We just wrapped production last week on a feature that we shot about 23 hours worth of footage for. For archiving, we used dual layer DVDs. They’re kind of a pain in the a** right now because the burn speeds are still slow, & we made a few coasters in the process, but once they’re burned to disk, they’ll outlast video tape by a long shot.

Actually, I think it’s rather cheap. Take a look at what Avid charges for HD. And remember that their prices have come down in the last couple of years!

If you can, take it back & swap it for a Panasonic HVX-200. DVCPro HD is a better codec to work with, & the picture quality of the HVX is very good. It’s a little softer than most cameras in this price range, but the benefits of DVC Pro & P2 are well worth it. And the softer image is more forgiving, as well. Your actresses will loooove this camera!
