On Perestroika, we also used redundant hard drives, but we backed those up with 2 sets of DVD-ROM (twice the redundancy!). All cards (73 of them) were cloned to DVD+DL using Toast, so the original directory structure- MXF files, lastclip.txt, etc, was intact.

It actually does label them sequentially. The 1st 4 digits in the file name are a sequential number. Only The last 2 digits are random.

If this happens again, click in the Browser window, make sure that nothing is selected and choose File>Export>XML. Follow the prompts & make sure that you select an appropriate location & name for the file. This will make an XML file of your entire project, & you should be able to open it just like it was a real FCP project.

I’m working with a director with nearly 40 years of experience. We’re both blown away by the idea that we can do effects on a laptop. Days, hours or minutes after they’ve been shot! And the idea that we can hold the equivalent of 2000 feet of film or half a reel of any pro tape format on a DVD that costs around $1.70 doesn’t hurt!

I have been on location for close to 2 months editing a feature being shot on P2 with a G4 Powerbook. There’s no question that a G5 can handle this media, as long as you have adequate drives & some way to import the P2 media. In the field, I’ve been using FW800 drives. They’re capable of playing back the HD 24PN without dropping frames. We’ve been able to play back footage and we’ve been able to make scratch keys & comps of shots on the Mac minutes after it’s been shot. It’s a whole new way of working!!!

For the feature I’m working on, I chose to use DL DVDs for archiving. The original file structure of each card was copied to 2 DL DVDs (we’re veeeery into redundancy here. We like to repeat our redundancies! 🙂 We also kept a hot backup of each media drive with the converted QT files, in the event of a disk failure (we only had 1 disk crash, & Disk Warrior repaired it in 5 or 10 minutes without any loss of data). So far, it’s worked out well, but I can’t wait to get home after 2 months on location!

1- use a professional video monitor that you can calibrate to color bars- it must have a ‘blue only’ or ‘blue check’ function.
