    Hi Gang,
I have a G4 laptop that I’ve had for a long time and it has an NFR of FCP 5.0.4 on it from my days of freelancing with apple. I don’t have disks for this copy as I downloaded it internally from the LAN at Apple.

But now I need 5.1.2 to complete an article I’m writing. I have a new NFR of FC Studio Universal Binary. My G4 is too slow to load motion, but I’d like to install the rest of the suite, if possible AND keep my second FCP license on the same machine.

I want to go ahead and just install it, but afraid I’ll blow away my “vintage” FCP 5 install.

I seem to recall Shane posting on how to do this without upsetting the apple cart. Can someone post the link for me or provide a quick “how to”?

I think you just need to rename your ‘vintage’ copy to something like “Final Cut Pro 5.0.4”. But I’d do a backup of the system drive (or at least your applications folder) first, just to be on the safe side.

I’m just concerned that my license ID for 5.0.4 will get overwritten.

Aha, that I don’t know about. If the licensing information is in your Home folder, you could simply make new user account, and install FCP 5.1.2 under that account. but if it’s in the library at the root level of your system, it could be an issue.

I think what I may do is install OS X on this new firewire drive I have, boot to that, and install the whole FC Studio into that. Hey, it’s a happy problem and a good Sunday project. Cheaper than buying a new Mac today. 😉

Looking forward to the next hardware revs. I’m way overdue for a new tower and laptop.

Much more fun than trying to get english dialog to work under a monolog shot in Russian!

I have FCP 4.5, 5.0.4, 5.1.1 and 5.1.2 on my system. All reference the same System ID and all work fine.

Do these all reference the same serial or are they all on different serials?

Eventually, I want 2 functioning FCP 5 rigs. One on the G4 and the new one on the Intel Mac I am planning on getting

Well, they all have different serial numbers, of course, but they all reference the one Final Cut Pro system ID. None have complained that the serial for it was for another version. The System ID is for the latest version I have running, yet FCP 4.5 still works fine.

DOn’t really know the answer to that question…

Well, I installed OS X onto a firewire drive and was able to install Studio as well. But since my PowerBook is only a 800 mHz, it will not run Motion. Therefore the plug-ins from Motion do not get installed into FCP.

DRAT. Looks like I may need to go get a mini today. I NEED those plug ins in FCP for my article.
