I don’t think about it in those terms, so I’d be the wrong one to ask. To me, these are different combinations of tools to work in different environments, or to meet specific needs for certain projects.
And I believe in setting up a workflow system specifically to meet the needs of the project on hand, not in making the project conform to my existing setup.
Do you need the mobility? If so, then a MBP with an IOHD is one of the best options. If not, then an IOHD with a MP is still a very powerful choice. If you need true uncompressed, any dual-link SDI or 2k workflow, then you won’t get it from an IOHD, you’ll need a Kona 3. I can see many situations where both a laptop on set with IOHD and a MP tower in the edit suite with a Kona 3 are needed.

You don’t have to give up portability. You can keep the MBP & simply buy a desktop for your other needs.

Well, Todd, you’re on to something. You’re about 60-70% there. I think that you can probably stage a game. I suspect that if you work through the local high schools, you can probably get enough players to stage it. Then you’ll probably need to put some people in the stands. If it’s done properly, you shouldn’t need a ‘Cast of Thousands!!’, only a cast of dozens.

With FW800, I was able to chain 3 or 4 of the My Book Pro drives together on set without any problems.
You don’t say if it’s only one particular drive, or if it’s any drive in the 3rd position. If you haven’t already, try swapping the drives around & see what happens.

Don’t know if it will handle these files for you, but you might want to try MPEG Streamclip. If it can, this will let you do the transcoding in 1 step on your Mac from AVCHD to DVCPro HD.

I’ve been pulling a lot of keys from footage shot on an HVX-200, which uses the same codec. It’s a bit noisy, and sometimes keys with difficulty. I wound up pulling almost all of the final keys with Shake. If you go to the Shake forum here, look up the keying tutorials Andrew Shanks posted a couple of months ago. Even though he’s using DV footage in these tutes, I found them very helpful. In particular, there’s a neat trick about blurring the U & V channels in YUV color space to smooth out jaggies that really helped.

You’re confusing your graphics card (that runs your computer displays) with a video capture card that provides I/O for video tape decks & monitors.
You’re best bet would be an appropriate card from either AJA or Decklink.

I’d run a couple of tests, to make sure that you can get matching TC. You should be able to do this either with Compressor or using the batch export in FCP.
If you use Compressor, you can adjust the frame controls to smooth out any scaling. Make presets for the DVC Pro settings you want & the destination & make those the defaults, and it should be almost automatic.
Likewise within FCP, once you’ve got your settings & destination set, it’s all taken care of by FCP.
