Query continued from 2.5.07 timecode is OUT…

    Ok guru’s,

The footage dubbed from beta to dvcam looks like crap (as discussed + there’s the whole timecode issue) so my thinking is to hit the studio with the following request (tell me if the tech specs work):

The studio digitises the footage from the beta tape with the original timecode using their facility (i think they use liquid blue). I then get the digital files/takes copied over to my external hardrive, bring it back to my setup and edit/key/animate using FCP and AE.

My query though is will the digital files/takes captured from their setup be compatible and better quality for chroma keying than the footage i already have on dvcam? I operate off of a 2.3 dual G5, video card specs are:ATI Radeon 9650, Chipset Model ATY,RV351.

    Thanks for the support,
    Dan

Liquid Blue? Didn’t Avid buy Liquid?

I am not sure how that NLE captures footage, but it is NEVER advisable to capture footage on a different NLE than you are using to edit. Every NLE captures differently. I doubt you’ll have much luck working with the Liquid files.

You need to get a capture card and capture these yourself, or find a Final Cut Pro shop in town that can do this for you.

Would my system/video card handle raw beta footage?

    What is your system?

FCP with an A-to-D capture card is fully able to digitize Betacam.

Component would be the best analog capture choice.

    8-bit or 10-bit uncompressed for chroma-key-from-tape work.

    NO. This will not work.

From memory, your footage is on Betacam SX, right? Go and buy the cheapest Blackmagic card at around $300 (last time I looked) and rent a deck for the day.

Your Mac can handle uncompressed 10-bit SD well enough, but you will need (at a minimum) a good fw800 array like the G-Tech G-Raid to capture to. Capture at home, edit at home with nice crisp keys, and rent the deck again for the day to master.

And no nasty post house charges neither.

You’re confusing your graphics card (that runs your computer displays) with a video capture card that provides I/O for video tape decks & monitors.

You’re best bet would be an appropriate card from either AJA or Decklink.
