More seriously, stickies are posts or other notes that always “stick” at the top of a forum. Typically these are FAQs, lists of resources or otherwise full of useful information. Like not to upgrade to Leopard until someone else has got it working correctly with a setup that matches yours!

Short answer- you can’t do that via firewire.
Longer answer- If you want to cross convert HDV 1080 to 720, you need to use a deck with SDI (or an analog deck + an analog to SDI converter) and use a Kona 3 capture card. The Kona 3 is the only card for FCP that will cross convert between 1080 & 720 HD. Your footage will no longer be HDV, though. You can convert it to DVCPro HD, Apple Prores, or uncompressed.
As for why you can’t capture in 1080, you don’t give us enough information for that. Are you getting an error message? Are you sure that you shot HDV? Do you have the camera set correctly to output HDV?

The good news for those of us trying to squeeze another year of use out of our “obsolete” G5s is that Areca’s 11xx series controllers are Mac compatible. Areca has Mac drivers posted on their site, and the brochure lists Mac support as well. These cards support RAID 3, 5 & 6.
The bad news is that they ain’t cheap. They start at around $350 for an 1110, which supports 4 drives.

You can also get good prices on enclosures from pc-pitstop.com. You’ll notice that they sell enclosures identical to the burly boxes for around half the price.

I don’t think Sonnet makes a RAID 5 card for PCI-X. For that you need to use a RocketRaid from High Point, either a 3320 or any of the 2200 series; or you can use an Areca 1681 card. I don’t know if the Areca is available yet.

Square pixes require simple math. 360X270 is a 4X3 aspect. You need to export to 360X180.

You can try using the proc amp filter. Or you can try using a different CC filter. What happens if you use FCP’s 3-way CC instead of Color Finesse?

You’re starting with anamorphic video, or letterboxed video? You don’t need to crop the anamorphic video. You just want to set the geometry to resize it to square pixels. You would use the crop with letterboxed video to crop off the letterboxing.

Without reading the article, I can say that this is not new, nor is it unique to firewire. If the connection is interrupted during any kind of operation, you can lose data when a file, directory or drive becomes corrupted. This phenomena is as old as dropping your deck of IBM punchcards en-route to the reader from the punch.

Assuming that you have some sort of regular back up strategy in place, simply go back to your last backup. You do make regular backups, don’t you?
