December 30, 2009 at 6:42 am in reply to: my dvd looks terrible on windows media playerI don’t know if this is of any help, but in my view a DVD needs to be working and have proper image on a DVD player first and consequently on software DVD players like Mac DVD player, Power DVD etc. That is the purpose of proving a DVD anyway…
Whether it plays properly on media players like WMP VLC Core media player etc. should be somewhat irrelevant, cause if you think about it you could always ship/provide a computer friendly video file like quicktime H264 or WMV HD (with the 9 series profile). You’re probably aware that there’s a provision on DVD’s to also ship any kind of files with it you wish. On encore for example it is on the “Build” tab, there’s a section called “DVD-ROM Content” with a browse button, you can then point to the file(s) you wish to provide with your DVD while leaving the rest of the content intact.
On a side note it’s quite possible that WMP native mpg2 encoder is crappy and doesn’t process the video nicely (actually I’ve never had to use WMP for DVD viewing) so it could be the reason why you’re having problems. The other thing is that the biggest percentage of computer users out there has some sort of DVD software player installed by default so the computer will in 90% of cases invoke this player if the user clicks on the .vob files, so that might take a little bit of worrying of your back.
Cheers.

December 29, 2009 at 9:23 am in reply to: Premiere Pro 4- font not working on 2nd computerWhat kind of operating system are you using? Either way its impossible to see the referenced fonts (in a folder path manner) inside Premiere or in any other NLE for that matter, you’re just watching a list.
However either on Windows or MacOSX there’s a folder which has the fonts installed and you can check on duplicates. On the Mac there’s there’s the difference of having a user fonts folder and system fonts folder with the former being of course only available and visible from the user logged on pertaining to its fonts folder.
I hope that helps.
Cheers.

If you’re in the field you’re describing, you should really think about getting a Wacom tablet (hell I’m not a designer and cannot do without it) Once you get used it (2-3 days max) you’ll never want to go back.
Just a thought.
Cheers.

Premiere does not preview video in full quality, it does an approximation based on the type of video and your hardware.

November 12, 2009 at 9:54 pm in reply to: Hardware for my new edit suite… anyone see any problems? The 3ware card, will absolutely do the job since its recommended by BM.
As for the case, I don’t know, I think it looks ugly, but that’s just my view, also it doesn’t look like something that good in terms of usability and build quality. It can do the job, so you know, its your call…
My recommendation for more than double the money, but miles ahead as a product is this one here:
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112065
It exists in black aluminum as well, I have the silver aluminum edition and its been a breeze using it, so I strongly recommend it.
I hope this helps.
Cheers.

[Jeremy Haccoun] “Thanks for your reply. When you say ‘Extreme edition’ do you mean the 2K card? Cause on their website I can only see either the Decklink Studio or the HD extreme which is a PCI 4x card.”
Yeah that card, although mine is a late 2008 previous model but it is a PCIe x4 card like the new one.
As for the HP system, it looks like it is on spec and ready for your card. Maybe you should contact Blackmagic or maybe HP for 100% assurance ’cause you never know.

November 12, 2009 at 5:41 pm in reply to: Hardware for my new edit suite… anyone see any problems?I forgot that you listed a PCI-X card for a mainboard that only supports PCIe and PCI.
If you want a separate SATA controller buy a PCIe one. The Sonnet ones are very well made and built for professionals, check them out.

I use an i7 mainboard with the PCIe Extreme edition its the GA-EX58 UD4P but the UD5 also works with it for sure. The Asus P67 will also work, I can confirm it.
Stay away from the P55\socket 1156 platform. X58 is the way to go. Ironically intel’s own DX58SO mainboard is having problems with Decklink cards. Who knows maybe a bios or PCIe spec issue.

November 12, 2009 at 5:33 pm in reply to: Hardware for my new edit suite… anyone see any problems? Two things
The Asus is a well made mainboard, but in recent years Asus has been making completely useless and unstable Bioses, so keep that in mind, because you may encounter issues.
The 1000w PSU is absolutely overkill, a 750 is plenty enough for you with room to spare, you’re not a gamer with 3ple SLI.
Don’t forget to buy a proper case, with proper ventilation and a separate aircooled section for the hard drives. Lian Li and their aluminum cases are close the build quality and durability of a Mac Pro case.
Cheers.
