Thanks David, I will investigate that, however I don’t understand how the displacement mapping can drive the individual opacity of blocks, although I guess controlling the contrast and brightness of the fractal noise making the blocks could do it. I have discovered a preset ‘card wipe – 2D fractured’ that seems to have some of the qualities I need.

January 14, 2009 at 8:59 pm in reply to: Feature film comp settings for After Effects – help!I was approached by a first-time producer of a feature film to produce some opening titles. I did try and pin him down but he was pretty vague other than saying that 1.85 was what he wanted. I think it’s one of those weird situations where both sides are pretty inexperienced at the matter in hand but are unwilling to display their naivete. The only other feature film title I have produced was in 2.35 (2048×872).
AE does offer –
Cineon Half 1828×1323 1.37ar
Cineon Full 3656×2664 1.37ar
Film (2K) 2048×1556 1.32ar
Film (4K) 4096×3112 1.32arI understand your point about the HD set up, but will that be high enough resolution? I have been searching the net for pixel equivalents to film sizes, but still no luck.
Many thanks for your help.

I think AE may be overkill for what you need, or for the time you have to learn. AE can be one big title generator if you want but you will find better/cheaper (time and money)/easier solutions for your needs. Well cheaper and easier anyway!

Excellent, excellent advice. Thanks very much Darby.

If you are using the standard motion tracker in AE you probably will have a lot of trouble getting it right. I think you should investigate 3-D motion tracking or, if you have the latest AE, you should use Mocha. The camera is very close to the wall so the perspective shifts are dramatic and are probably too much for the standard tracker.

I agree, I think what you are responding to is a great commercial DOP. It may not be to everyone’s taste but it does display a high level of technical ability. I think there was postproduction work, but I’d bet it was minimal compared to the production.

Yep, do a search for ‘motion-tracking’ and ‘corner-pinning’.

Hi guys
Thanks for all the interesting discussion, although I never meant to absorb so much of everyone’s time, I was just looking for a quick bit of advice. I didn’t need to make a DVD, only a smallish file that the client would view online and then comment on. I normally work in AFX and outputting files in various sizes and formats seems to me a little easier, I rarely use PP and so was in unfamiliar territory and needed help. So, thanks. Although I am still not entirely clear… say I want a size that’s, say, a quarter height of the original format (1440×1080 ana) how do I work out the width and in what PAR?
Thanks again.

Good point; but, out of interest, what’s the downside?
