This may be too much work after the fact, but you could put the same new solid as the bottom layer in every comp, if you then do Command-Shift-Y you can change the colour and then check the box that says something like “do you want to apply this change to every instance of this solid?”

Off the top of my head: draw your spline, use Vegas to make the dots. Duplicate your spine layer, use Vegas to make the dashes. Fiddly, but may be possible.

– isolate the main elements you want to treat by rotoscoping (search the Cow if you are unfamiliar with that term)
– put each element into its own comp
– from here it’s down to you as an artist; you could make each comp 3-D, then use a camera to move everything into place, you could just animate and re-colour, you could do any number of thousands and thousands of things to that footage… good luck!A

Thanks Dan
I’m making progress with that. It took me a little while to understand what the angle variable was doing. However, when I tried to pick-whip the XY position of the particle emitter to the XY position of the Transform effect the particles went way out of whack. Is that because somehow the deformed text and the particle layer don’t exist in the same ‘3-D’ space? (basically I have a letter ‘O’ deforming and moving vertically responding to audio and I want the emitted particles to follow the letter as it moves).
Thanks again

Hi
I went through a similar process, eventually getting a reasonable handle on C4D through a variety of sources: as an introduction I went through the C4D courses at lynda.com, these were a really good intro to the interface and basic concepts. With that on board I joined https://www.c4dcafe.com – as I set myself more and more complex projects I used the cafe to get answers to specific problems I was having, or ways to approach a piece. The people there are every bit as helpful and approachable as on the Cow. Finally, I would occasionally use https://www.cineversity.com
If you are willing to invest in a book than I would advise instead investing in a couple of online subscriptions. I found I learnt a lot quicker and more easily using a structured approach and although a book does give you that I found the extra interactive nature of doing things online and seeing video tutorials suited me much better.
Good luck.

I’m a bit confused – that’s a link to a tutorial. Why don’t you just follow the tutorial? It’s not a hard one.

Just off the top of my head; maybe try duplicating the layer, masking out everything bar the droplets, then offsetting the duplicated layer in time by one frame, then touching up with Levels.

Hi Lewis
I’ve tried to reproduce your problem but I can’t. Everything seems to be working as it should be, I put a bit of Turbulent Noise on the blue solid, precomposed it and then split the comp window into two. One with the camera view, the other with a ‘top’ view. This way I could see the (pink) line of focus distance move as I scrolled the numbers. The results were in line with what I would expect. As I move the focus distance different parts of the solid come into focus. I can’t see any sign of your glitch, but maybe I’m just not looking hard enough. If you want the project I set up to test on your machine, just e-mail me. Maybe others can reproduce your problem.
Good luck.
