Although capture has no changing of format involved, only a transfer of data, doesn’t the DV formant’s compression need to be de-compressed (which would take action by the “..dec” part of the dv-codec) before being re-encoded into MPEG?

Be sure to get a “dual core” processor rather than just
one with “hyperthreading”. The Intel processors prior to the
dual core versions had ‘hyperthreading’ but that was more of a
buzz word than something useful. Had a very low improvment
of performance. Now the dual-core, esp. the Conroe ones
(like my new e6600) makes a big difference.

Beware that if you DO have 1394b (800 Mhz) ports on an XP machine and you
upgrade to SP2, the port’s performance may be very bad (sets the port speed very
low). There’s a fix for it that a little google’ing will find.

Don’t think the camera would work. Problem’s that the audio isn’t being encoded into the firewire stream for monitoring.

I know nothing about what is being discussed here (reading and learning!), but I use a plextor DVD burner so I know they come with software (PlexTools) that analyzes all sorts of DVD parameters including various error rates that include the PI/PO rates that were mentioned. Might be interesting to run it on the disc(s). Don’t know how useful, but seems like it could be interesting.

Jumbo frames can make throughput significantly higher when transferring a large amount of data over gigabit ethernet while trying to do it as fast as possible. However! EVERYTHING connected together in such a hookup must support jumbo frames! Anything that doesn’t will gag, and this includes any switch that may be connected (and many of those don’t support jumbo frames, although some like SMC’s do) as well as ALL the other devices connected to that switch.

If you’re using windows xp, just open a text command window
and type ftp and do the transfers. Good for
simple transactions, particularly if you already know “ftp”
(same syntax as unix versions “forever”). And it’s already
there for free.

For more extensive things wsftp and the others are easier,
but for the quickie simple transaction, the command line version
works fine. 🙂

Yes, Taiyo Yuden is the brand I use too.

If you have a Plextor drive (what I use) you can
bring up the software that comes with it and measure
the error-rate (usually only showing correctable errors).
The Taiyo Yuden 8X “-R” discs burnt on the Plextor shows error rates
way way way below the max allowable spec. in my experience
and is why I use those discs (error rates varied with brand in
my testing). Might help with compatibility if error rates are marginal.

AFAIK the Volume Label isn’t in the VIDEO_TS stuff. When burning a DVD from “Nero Burning Rom” (what I use, because I’ve been using it forever) you can just type in the Volume name in a box on the Label tab of the Compilation Properties. Have done it, works fine. But it’s not a “disk copying” thing, it’s a “DVD-Video” project and you drag your VIDEO_TS directory into the project and then usually just edit the volume label there, although one can do it the properties as well as mentioned above.

Not sure about Vegas, but in most Windows programs (you didn’t say what you were using) if you do a “Save-As”, it’ll go to the same directory that a “Save” would go to. So if you do that, just wee what directory the “Save->As” is going, and it’s probably there.
