Actually the background is an empty void and shows up as black.
As Steve said turn on the eyeball and it will show your still.

I see there is als dv-avi’s in upper field. They all need to be changed to lower field. You can do that in the Interprete footage in the Project window.

I would set up a 480×720 interlaced sequence as most of the footage is SD.
Dont change the par, interprete footag is to be set as it come with the footage. Still which can be brougth down in framesize and probably need Always Deinterlace and Reverse Dominance as you are on a lower field timeline.
