Minimum system requirement for HDV is a dual core.
OP has a P4, not quite the same.
Dan’s methode is meant for getting a HDV timeline to SD dvd.
Downconverting in the camera will give you good quality footage.

If you capture footage straight into Premiere off a hdv camera you get .mpeg files. If you use other software (like HDV split or Vegas) you get m2t. Basicly ist the same.
Make sure you have the latest update as Todd already mentioned.
Run the mpeg file through HDV split and let it scene detect.

This will give you a chopped up movie file, import that into Premiere.
Small files do not give you out of sync problems, one long file tends to do just that.———————————————–

If your machine cannot handle any other then SD, capture your footage in SD (downconvert in the camera)

As Barrie says, make sure camera is set to HDV and not DV or AUTO.
Do not change settings while camera is connected to computer, OS will not see that.
Now connect camera to comp. switch camera on (never connect to comp when power is on, chances are you will blow up firewire on your camera).
Wait until OS sees camera, open Premiere and select capture window.
This should do the trick.
If HDV/DV text is flickering in camera lcd you will know Premiere does not see camera.———————————————–

Neither is there in CS5.5, probably never will.
HDV split offers preview.

I can reproduce that with two instances of the same clip.
If i use two different clips its gone.
Work around would be to import the clip twice.
And please file a bugreport.

When you are mixing SD with HD the plugin will help you upscale SD to HD.
Otherwise its of no use imo.
I do not understand the issue you are having in Q1.
What shows up op your tv?If you got a mic hanging cover it up with a track matte or do some cloning in AE.
