Can’t capture video in capture window

There is no preview in the capture window while capturing hdv.
Neither is there in CS5.5, probably never will.
HDV split offers preview.
But can you capture your tape to HDD?

Also when I try to record it doesn’t do it. The counter on the capture window counts up, and after the video is done it doesn’t ask me to save and rename the file. When I check in the folder for the file, it not there.

Be sure to have the capture settings on HDV and not DV.

As Barrie says, make sure camera is set to HDV and not DV or AUTO.
Do not change settings while camera is connected to computer, OS will not see that.
Now connect camera to comp. switch camera on (never connect to comp when power is on, chances are you will blow up firewire on your camera).
Wait until OS sees camera, open Premiere and select capture window.
This should do the trick.
If HDV/DV text is flickering in camera lcd you will know Premiere does not see camera.

Yes Jon, I do have it on HDV. I can’t record to my computer. It won’t save after I stop the record button also. I can control the camcorder functions from the following software packages, (Premiere Pro CS5 64 bit. Sony Vegas Pro 9 or 10, and Nero 10). Using any of these packages will not record my tape. I think it a function that is not checked or that is checked in the software that’s keeping the software from recording my tape. Can you give me any suggestions? Thanks.

Are you certain the Camera isn’t using the downconvert function making the firewire connection DV and not HDV…

This catches heaps of people out…

Could be a faulty cable? Could be the connection to the camera was done in the wrong order and it has been fried. (must add camera connection to switched off camera and the other end to the computer then switch camera on).

Try to capture in DV with the downconvert on to rule out the cable and camera connection being fried.

Dump the preferences by holding down the cmd (mac)/control (pc) + alt + shift keys during PPro launch. This will reset any presets you may have created and not exported (so I strongly suggest you export any presets and reimport them after the preferences dump).

I would think that the camera being set to not downconvert, the firewire having control of the deck and the capture settings on PPro set to HDV then you technically should be getting an image in the capture window. Only when you are capturing do you lose the tape image to the message referring you to the camera/deck for previewing.

Did it ever work in HDV? If all else fails reinstall…

I made a video tape and the camcorder viewfinder shows DV 16:9, 60i, 16 bit, and I taped in 120 mins LP. I have tried all presets on my Canon XL H1a camcorder and none works. What should I set the preset on.

So I take it that this was not the camera that recorded the tape.

LP mode is a consumer recording speed that will not playback on a recording device that doesn’t record in that format.

There is nothing wrong with premiere pro its the camera that can’t play the tape. You will need a camera that can record in LP mode to play it back and PPro will capture it fine.

But why would I be able to record the video on my camcorder but can’t capture the video om PP? The camcorder is made to record in different formats and should be capture in any software package. They how would I able to capture my video from a $5000.00 camcorder?
