Can’t capture video in capture window

I have a (once was $8000) Sony HDV Z1P and it can’t playback LP mode tapes as it is not a format it records in. Unless you can get the camera to playback the tape on its own then no software will be able to ingest it.

I just did some research on your model camera and I apologise. It seems your camera can recording in LP mode when set to DV format.

Perhaps the camera is not set properly in playback mode (VTR) so you aren’t able to see the image on the camera… Is there an Auto format setting when a tape goes in and plays that it adjusts to the correct playback mode?

It is possible that the camera is sending a mixed signal down the firewire in auto mode. You may need to set it to DV and LP playback for PPro to recognise the signal properly..?

Another possiblity is that the Recording Capture settings are not set to DV. You can have control over the deck in HDV capture settings but won’t actually get to capture.

Im sure there is someone out there with a successful use of your situation with the same camera and an LP tape.

Jon, I recorded in DV not HDV. I set it for LP. I need to capture the video in the PP capture window. I can again control the camcorder (play, record, stop, etc…) from PP CS5 in this mode, but nothing shows in the capture window. I try all the presets in PP, and nothing works. I don’t see why the camcorder can’t capture, even though it has presets for DV. Do I need a piece of equipment just to copy the tape in DV? If so, what would you recommend? Also what would the DV settings be in PP CS5? Thanks

Hi Roger,

Sorry for all the confusion. It appears we were all asking you to make sure everything was set to HDV and not DV. When in fact as you have recorded in DV LP mode, you DO need the settings in DV mode. The Device Controller is the same for DV or HDV so that’s why you were able to control the camera. You couldn’t see the image as we all thought you were working with HDV not DV. Then then we missed a step in confirming the settings for DV not HDV.

Make sure the camera is set to Playback or VTR in DV LP mode and not Auto.

Here is a screen grab of what needs to be set for DV capture.

I really hope this helps with your situation. I can’t imagine how frustrating this must be for you having gone on for so long.

I will do my utmost to be sure and ask what format users have recorded in next time before assuming a HDV camera was recording in HDV. Shame on me.

I set everything you said in your e-mail.
When I try to record again and then stop, a error windows pops up and said “recorded capture no frames”.
My camcorder viewfinder shows:
DV 16:9
16 bit
60i
LP

What preset in PP should I have PP set on?
I tried several presets and nothing works.

Can you give me exact setting in PP for my DV tape in possible?

I am interested in whether your camera can ingest some footage that has been captured in DV SP…

That screen grab I showed about known issues related to LP mode recordings could be in play.

Let’s at least eliminate the possibility the camera or cable or FW port is the problem.

PS: The sequence type makes no difference to the capture settings.

You could have a HDV sequence but the capture settings will remember the last setting used, so if it was DV that would be what it is trying to ingest. (It doesn’t auto correct the ingest based on the sequence settings)
