I would make a sequence that is the same as the output size.
Render as in red line turning to green or export?
The images are jpeg so you will have a red line.
Don’t use the preview files, most of the time you will end up with the wrong codec.

In order to place transitions the clips need handles.
An AE compositon clip does not have handles, hence the short transition.
When replacing a clip with an AE composition make the clip longer on each side before replacing so that when back into Premiere you have enough footage to make the transition.

Dont use match source attributes, it uses the preview codec which is of lesser quality.
Use a preset or set everything manually

When you download Neoscene it comes with a little app that will let you convert your footage to Cineform.avi’s
Cineform has it own presets with Premiere, I think that will be the same for CS4.
If it does not just make a custom preset with i-frame only mpeg in the Custom tab of the New Sequence.
Neoscene has a trial for 15 days. Just try it.
I use to use it a lot when i was on CS4.

Avi is a container and Xvid is the codec.
Well you wont be able to edit that either.
Xvid is very high compressed soly for the purpose of watching and not editing.
Alas.
Cineform is your best option for CS4 or upgrade.
