In the freezer, I’d be wary of condensation. But I *did* put one in the fridge once. I’m not sure if it helps much more than just letting it cool down to room temperature, tho.

And it’s also only useful when the drive is having problems reading (I/O errors).

Chris, have you installed the Diskwarrior daemon that monitors the SMART status? This is a really useful utlity… it can *predict* failures before they happen. I had a drive which was running perfectly well but had a SMART error. I called Maxtor and they assured me that the drive was going to fail. I probably saved myself a nightmare or two by replacing it before it failed…

The moral of the story: run the Diskwarriror daemon.

it’s weird that disk utility sees it and not Diskwarrior.

Sometimes failing HDs work while they are cold and then fail again when they get warmer. But in case of a loud clicking noise, then it often doesn’t matter.

but anyway, if you choose to try to recover it yourself, shut down the computer for an hour or two, boot it again, load DW immediately and hurry up copying important data. It has worked for me in the past.

and btw, it’s probably a coincidence, but i’ve seen many 250gb maxtor failing…

[Kevin Monahan] “Rather a blanket statement, that’s really untrue. A lot of videographics programs run better on the PC. After Effects and 3D apps especially”

it’s funny, I consider After Effects to be *the* app that runs equaly great on mac than on pc. It’s amazingly stable and performance is globaly very similar.

Combustion, on the opposite, runs better on PC… and mac version 4 is lagging since like 8 months…

I predict that the media manager will be fixed. hihihihhahahhahahhohohoho

    but wait… that’s not a feature….

  • thanx for the suggestions.

For the record, I finaly got it by precomposing the gradient and the shatter layer together. It doesn’t make sense, but maybe there was something fuzzy with my other layers… anyway, now I got exactly what I wanted… this geat feeling of satisfaction 😉

  • forgto to say that I did try to precompose…

    and i’m on AE 6.5.1, OS X 10.3.9

oh well, one point for combustion…

this uses the 3D compositing ability of AE.

You do the objects in Illustrator, you animate the graphics in compositons in AE, then you both animate these comps and the camera. If you look carefuly, you will undestand that the nested compositions in and out are pretty much animated indepandently than the global camera movement. The smoothness of the camera you’re talking about is probably motion blur coupled with the sharp movements of the camera. Learn to use the camera tool, it’s much more intuitive once you’re used to it.

August 26, 2005 at 8:04 pm in reply to: AAF from Final Cut Pro 5.0

[jorje] “After Effect 6.5 don’t opens AAF exported from FCP 5.”

Do you have automatic duck? If not, you’re not exporting AAFs.

The best way to work between FCP and AE, is, in my experience, to load an edited clip from the timeline to the viewer, then Export -> Quicktime movie (uncheck Make self contained movie). I name this movie with the sufffix “_source” for clarity and I put it in an “Effects” folder of my project folder. Then I load it in AE, do the effects, and render a QT using a “_fx” or whatever suffix in the name. I then delete the clip in FCP timeline, load the “_fx” render clip and put it at the place of the old clip.

Sounds complicated, but it’s easier than loading up an entire timeline in AE and then reload it in FCP…

just setting the ram use to something like 90% and RAM cache to 60% prevents AE from caching into VM when rendering and during RAM previews. I don’t know why they are set so high by default… or maybe i’m missing something.
