[Peter Wiggins] “My clients won’t touch a J3, they call it a mickey mouse VT. The timecode not updating properly in shuttle is a big gripe.
And from my perspective, the jog knob is horrendous. There is poor if not any dropout correction on SP too (if people still use that)

    Its cheap though…”

A J3 *cheap*? I hope you mean *relatively* cheap, because you can buy a damn car at the price of a J3.

As far as the the timecode not updating properly… you mean the fact that the timecode goes temporarly faster than the tape when changing speed? I agree it’s weird, but this is a concession to make when you can save many thousands of dollars…

Is this a project that was started on a previous version of fcp and then updated to 4.5 ? I had similar experience when doing so… slow trimming, dropped frames (even on an empty part of the timeline! ), some random crash while browsing/trimming.

I don’t have a solution, but if my memory is right, some ppl got positive results by recapturing the media. But then you’ll need to watch out the speed changes becase half of them will be screwed…

either precompose the adjustment layer with the text layer or then apply the blur effect on the text layer.

  • in my experience, this error means somethings like “end of file was reached prematurely”. So either the file is corrupted when it is written on the Lacie or when it is read on it.

Did you try copying back the file to the Xraid? Is the Lacie one of those funky drive with two drives inside RAIDed toghether?

  • is the Lacie formatted in HFS+?

    If it’s FAT32, there *is* a 2gb limit. If it’s NTFS, it’s read only.

are you using CMX3600? CMX340 format doesn’t allow letters in tape reel. and I always had more success with 3600.

Check the logging and timing infos in the offending clips. I don’t have any more ideas…

is the timecode problematic with those speed change?

to “rebuild” the speed change, place the timeline cursor on the clip you wish to replace, hit the x key, then the f key, and then SHIFT+F11 (fit to fill).

I found that when you do a speed change to a clip and then reedit it on the timeline, it sometimes gets messed up. And of course, never use variable speed change when exporting EDLs.

I had a somewhat similar problem before. What I did is the to switch the Sorting to “Source, Audio merged” instead of “Master, audio merged”.

if you have speed change, then can also corrupt the timecode. You can either rebuild it or remove speed changes entirely.

September 14, 2005 at 9:25 am in reply to: Reversed telecine clips back to 29.97 ?

[Shane Ross] “Export an EDL. Use Cinema tools to convert the EDL to a 29.97 frame rate. Give the newly converted EDL to the Symphony folks.

maybe it’s too late for me to think, but looking at the timecodes, I presume it will drift from the conversion of 23.93 back to 29.97. But now that i’m writing this, I think I overlooked the fact that minutes and seconds doesnt change when switching from 23.98 to 29.97, so my previous sentence is pure misunderstanding.

And looking at the time (the real one, not timecode), I presume I should just go sleep and let it go…

Any reason you can’t online using FCP?”

Many reasons, not much technical ones 😉

    thanx for the help.

when you start DW, click on the Hardware tab, then “Automatic Diagnostic” and then check “Automaticaly check…”. I’ve set it to check hourly and I didn’t notice any lag, but letting it check daily should be ok anyway.

You can even make it send you an email in case there is a problem (!).
