    hey there,

    i have a huge 7 camera (70 plus hours of footage)music shoot to cut for a live DVD.

    I havn’t worked much with digibeta so can i get a couple of bits of advice.

    firstly, for ingest will a Sony J-30 with SDI do the job. It’s a player only and a lot cheaper to rent than a recorder which i wont need till the very end to output a master.

    Secondly, i will be cutting this project on a new Kona 2/FCP 5 system with 2TB of fibre channel storage. What is the basic min/storage ratio at full rez?

    Excellent choice, I purchased a J3 about two years ago and it’s a complete workhorse.

    75GB/hour is a good approx to start with.

    Walter will disagree with me here, but..

    My clients won’t touch a J3, they call it a mickey mouse VT. The timecode not updating properly in shuttle is a big gripe.
    And from my perspective, the jog knob is horrendous. There is poor if not any dropout correction on SP too (if people still use that)

    Its cheap though…

    thanks for your perspective. what would be your suggestion for an ingest machine? the full throttle digibeta player/recorder (model 500 or something) they are pretty pricey

    all the tapes are time of day so i need rocksolid timecode to sync up my cameras….dodgy timecode on the J3 doesnt sound helpful!!!

    A J3 *cheap*? I hope you mean *relatively* cheap, because you can buy a damn car at the price of a J3.

    As far as the the timecode not updating properly… you mean the fact that the timecode goes temporarly faster than the tape when changing speed? I agree it’s weird, but this is a concession to make when you can save many thousands of dollars…

    Actually, I have found the J-30 to be a great ingestion deck, I usually run no less than a dozen for straight offlineRT digitizing and have very few problems, even with timecode. With the Kona card, you can even use the J-30 for uprezzing if you want via SDI. I have grown to appreciate the deck for what it is worth and I would recommend it for your task. Only when ready, get the MSW to output and save yourself a lot of cash…relatively of course…

    Yep, I’ll disagree with you here. It’s been a complete workhorse for two years with zero issues. I have no idea what you’re talking about with the timecode deal, never seen anything like that.

    I don’t use the Jog knob as it’s controlled via FCP and SP captures look better coming down SDI than they did on my old analog SP machines. I’ve recommended this machine to several other people and it’s been a solid performer for them as well.

    It’s performed so well, we’re looking at the JH-3 for the shop when we get our first HDCAM native project. Right now all our HD work is Varicam so we have the 1200A here now.
