Was the project upgraded from FCP 4.5 ? I did encounter similar issues when updating medium to big projects from a previous version.

are you sure that the your Video Plaback (in View-> Video Playback) is set to something like “Decklink 10 bit component YUV PAL” ? I think it defaults to DV.

If there is nothing regarding the decklink in that menu, you might have installed the dekclink drivers before FCP, so it’s missing the video out presets… in that case, you must reinstall the drivers.

There’s also a bug in a QT installer that breaks the video device connection when you install QT 7 and then revert back to 6.5.2. Tell us if you did.

FCP’s compressor controls are pretty much the same as any compressor controls… threshold, ratio, attack and release.

The name of the effect implies that it’s both a compressor and a limiter, but in my experience it’s not a good limiter because of its attack time which can’t be set lower than 1ms. Any real limiter will go much lower than this. This is why FCP’s “limiter” will not smooth very fast transients, like a “brick wall” limiter would. The best you can do is set the ratio to 100 the attack to 1 and the threshold aout 2-3db lower than your target peak level.

I recently looked into Soundtrack Pro and the tools provided for audio mastering seems very very great. I don’t know how great is the integration with FCP, others could comment on that.

when you reconnect the media in AE, do you reconnect it directly from FCP’s capture scratch or is it exported (by you or automatic duck) prior to this? This maybe is where your problem lies.

Also make sure your render settings are set to YUV and not RGB inside of FCP.

[ronen] “what will happend to the superimpositions and keyframs? will they transfer
    too?”

You must export a separate EDL for each video track. You do this by switching the track target and enabling “Target video track only”.

Dissolves should transfer. Speed changes probably won’t since you’re converting the timecode rate. No filter will transfer, but they can be printed as comments. Not sure what kind of keyframes you’re talking about (filter? opacity? audio levels?), but they won’t.

[Shane Ross] “They should. Speed ramps might have to be re-created, but other things should transfer. I edited a short film shot on film, telecined to D5, downconverted to DVCAM, edited 29.97 (should have reverse telecined and edited 23.98), did the EDL convert and onlined the D5 at 23.98. The only thing that didn’t transfer were the two speed ramps.”

Did the D5 had 29.97 timecode? If so, I’m not sure you should have reverse telecined the clips. Last time I did something like this (I had reversed telecined the clips by error, but this is another story…), the EDL was totaly screwed on the Symphony. I guess it was because Symphony was expecting 29.97 source TC. The Cinema Tools 23.98 to 29.97 TC conversion did not work any better in that case.

What I learned from this is to always work with the same TC rate as the master tape. If the master is 23.98 and the DV offline is (of course) 29.97, then it’s better to reverse telecine in FCP. But even if the source is told to be “24p” , very often it’s 23.98 *plus* pulldown (29.97). This is true with DV, but also with XDCAM… In that case you *must* work in 29.97, because this is the TC the tape has on it.

I know this all sounds obvious, but I’m sure i’m not the only one who was fooled by pulldown added 23.98 material…

October 8, 2005 at 6:34 pm in reply to: EDL HELP!!!! Emergency

… and I wish there was a way to convert/ripple timecode of many clips at the same time in FCP. Changing timecode clip by clip is tedious. Of course Avid’s EDL Manager (which you can download of avid’s website btw) can ripple and convert source and record TC to anything, but it doesn’t work with speed changes, so they get broken.

    One day, one day…

and Shift-scroll to scroll the timeline horizontaly.

yeah i know, but very often I don’t even know something is selected. Like when I select a clip, I scroll the timeline and then try to zoom in, it scrolls back to the selected object and zoom in. Annoying…

[Rick Dolishny] “I mapped “/” to Sequence>Add Edit. It’s like bb + left click but you can use it while playing a timeline and playback won’t stop! Great for chopping up voice overs.”

The default is control-V. Very, very handy.

There’s also option- ‘=’ and ‘-‘ to zoom the timeline ONLY (even if the canvas or viewer window is active). Would be even better if it did not zoom on the selected object…
