Working with AE and Motion I expanded to Fcp suite. Spend a lot of time preparing and installing. I’m just done. Unlike Ae and Motion the previewing through a broadcast monitor works different I guess. Somehow I don’t get a signal out. I’ve tried various settings but no result. How do I get this sorted?

System: OSX 10.3.9, Fcp 5.0.2, Decklink HD, latest drivers

Hit control q and select the blackmagic preset for the codec you are using. For instance, if you are rendering out 10 bit NTSC, select the 10 bit NTSC blackmagic easy set up, create a new sequence, import your footage, put it in the newly created sequence and you are off and editing.

Sorry Jeremy, no result. Let me explain what my setup looks like. No decks attached to the decklink card, only the broadcast monitor. I have a little dv camera which of course uses FireWire for capture. I’ve tried both capturing little test clips from the camera and also QT clips from the local HD. Whatever setting I chose for playing the clips, the broadcast monitor goes to black or just displays an empty dektop. If my setup works fine for AE/Combustion/Motion why won’t it work for FCP? Sorry, I’m very green here and the manual doesn’t discuss hardware setup options. BTW: I reside in Pal country.

are you sure that the your Video Plaback (in View-> Video Playback) is set to something like “Decklink 10 bit component YUV PAL” ? I think it defaults to DV.

If there is nothing regarding the decklink in that menu, you might have installed the dekclink drivers before FCP, so it’s missing the video out presets… in that case, you must reinstall the drivers.

There’s also a bug in a QT installer that breaks the video device connection when you install QT 7 and then revert back to 6.5.2. Tell us if you did.

Got it! Somehow during installation something odd happened. AE found it’s card settings switched to a weird Ntsc setting, Combustion got another weird Hd setting. Motion was the only app with correct settings. After putting back the right settings for each app I returned to Fcp which suddenly worked. The card probably got confused between Pal settings for projects and Ntsc or Hd settings for the card I guess. Very odd since the apps weren’t running. The only thing I have to do manually is switch to Firewire dv for capture and back to Blackmagic for playback/editing. Or win the lottery and buy a fat dv deck with a sdi i/o. Anyway, time to catch some sleep. Thanks eveyone.

Glad to hear you got it working. There’s a bunch of variables with hardware and it’s hard to try and track down the right one. I should have advised you to check out the Decklink control panel in the system preferences and see what the was telling you as well. I used to have a decklink but I’m not too familiar with what they are running now in terms of drivers and preferences and such.

Coyote might be on to something, and uninstall and reinstall of the decklink drivers might fix the problem if this happens in the future.

    Happy editing.
